About me

Hiya! I'm Emma. I'm a second year student currently studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Exeter. My degree particularly interests me as it covers a wide range of subjects. I could be studying how Existentialism was developed through literature in the morning; and then jump to calculus in economics in the afternoon. Therefore, I am passionate about many things. I could be studying how Existentialism was developed through literature in the morning; and then jump to calculus in economics in the afternoon. Therefore, I am passionate about many things. My choice of tutoring subjects represents this: I tutor English literature, Maths, Philosophy and French.

My brother is a GCSE student. He struggles with being motivated for school and homework. I have always helped him. This has led me to want to also reach out and help other students. In college, I set up a student led tutoring group. In my first year of university, I tutored and coached GCSE math students with an organisation called Coachbright. I believe motivation, confidence and self-esteem are key to learning. They therefore play an important role in my sessions.

About my sessions

For GCSE, A levels and IB students, I will base my lessons around past papers. By looking at these, the student and I can work out what they need more help with or need to focus on more. Of course, if the student has particular requests or needs help for something in particular, I will focus on that. I think it is also important to find out how the student learns best. For instance, in maths, visualising diagrams tends to help me understand better.

In my first lesson, I will set up a goal the student would like to achieve. We will then see how this goal can be achieved. Goal setting is something I learned about when being a coach with Coachbright. It helps motivate students. For instance, this goal can be: "getting an A in maths so I can get into university".
