Hello! I’m Calypso and I’m a Classics graduate from Oxford University. I’ve always had a passion for Latin and Greek from my very first lesson when I was eight years old. Hello! I’m Calypso and I’m a Classics graduate from Oxford University. I’ve always had a passion for Latin and Greek from my very first lesson when I was eight years old. I love the way the languages fit together so logically, as well as the etymological side of Latin and Greek as bases for Indo-European languages - if you know Greek and Latin, you will find Spanish, French and Italian a lot easier to learn! They are very useful and worth working hard at. I don’t want to sound too stern, though! Teaching and learning should be fun, and I’ll aim to get to know you as a student as best as possible to help you reach your academic goals.

About my sessions

The first meeting/lesson would establish the key topic a pupil with which a pupil is struggling. Here I'll use the example of the cases in Latin.

An example of this follow-up Latin lesson would be:

5 minutes of 'Hello, how are you? how has your week been? etc' - I think it is crucial that you maintain a positive relationship with the pupil and make sure to show that their welfare/brain health is important.

5-10 minute test: (oral test)...

5-10 minute test: (oral test) Q: what are the 6 cases? A: nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative. etc

15 minutes going over homework (set week before)

30 minutes doing exercises, working either from their recommended textbook or one I supply myself (eg. John Taylor's Latin to GCSE)

5 minute summary of lesson and setting of homework.

This is a rough outline of how I was tutored by both my mother and others. A five minute break is ideal in an hour slot so that the pupil feels refreshed and ready to start absorbing information.

Additionally, the keeping, maintaining and treasuring of a subject file is, to my mind, a crucial element of learning and respecting what you have learnt as well as your ability to learn it. My lessons would include a variety of organisational elements, as well as time-management. I can also cover exam technique.
