About me

I am studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Warwick, but I started out in a small private school in Moscow, Russia. I myself studied with several tutors when transferring to a boarding school in England, and then went through the adventure of GCSE's (with 7 A*'s) and A-levels. My teachers were great and I revised well, but of course there were subjects where I didn't get the grades I really wanted! Perhaps I should've just spent more time going over past papers.....

I myself studied with several tutors when transferring to a boarding school in England, and then went through the adventure of GCSE's (with 7 A*'s) and A-levels. My teachers were great and I revised well, but of course there were subjects where I didn't get the grades I really wanted! Perhaps I should've just spent more time going over past papers... But, I think having a structured revision plan with someone, who could bring a different perspective, a new method or a useful example my teachers didn't give, would've helped me reach my full potential.

I believe this journey gives me a sound understanding of what to bring to a truly helpful tutorial. My experience of studying both with and without tutors makes it clear what effect tutoring could have.

I selected Engineering as my degree because I really enjoy the direct impact it has on everyone's lives, and I want to be a part of it. I am very happy with my course and I am finding it very interesting and rewarding. That said, I still find parts of it challenging and less exciting. So, whether you want to be an engineer, a mathematician or just want to get the daunting physics exam over with, I don't doubt I can help you!

About my sessions

I have observed the difference between one-on-one tutoring and a professor, teaching an entire lecture hall. Although I have many brilliant, engaging professors, who make me enjoy academia, they focus on the subject. When I tutor I put the student's needs first, and tailor my enlightening efforts to the tutee. In the beginning I want to get to know the student better, and become what one could call "professional friends". I want to know what they study, which topics they enjoy or dislike, and why they think they want (or need) tutoring. Then I can begin determining their learning style and areas of strength and weakness and target the problems in a useful manner. It is also important to have a clear desired outcome - a final goal, which fully satisfies all parties involved.

I always try to relate my experience - I've been in their shoes and I want my students to feel comfortable. It is crucial for me and my tutee to discover what they can enjoy about the learning of particular subject, even if it is stressing less about exams. Becoming more confident in finding ways to approach what used to be a hated subject is so rewarding!

Over a course of several tutorials, I try to balance the volume of material with the depth of understanding. Setting SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound) targets helps students progress, feel accomplished and keep approaching the main goal.

This time, Artyom analysed the sample papers and created a table with the most recurring topics with the relevant questions and weblinks which were very helpful.

My son is sitting the new DT GCSE exam but unfortunately has had no teacher for a significant part of last and this year and so has not covered much of the curriculum yet. Unfortunately, this new exam had put off many of the other tutors for DT. However, I am happy that Artyom looked closely at the five example papers on the relevant website and agreed to 2 hour lessons as this is what my son likes. He also has a very calm approach to teaching and it was just what my son needed to help focus on what he needs to know and how to answer the questions for optimum marks. After just three 2 hr lessons, my son and I now feel confident that he will actually do well this summer.
