I have always loved English because I like stories. Reading and analysing texts has become a passion because unlike other subjects there are no wrong answers. As long as you can support your ideas with evidence in the text everything you read is open to interpretation.

When I originally started taking exams in school I enjoyed the adrenalin rush and the new ideas that would come to me under pressure. It was only when I was studying at a university level that I realised the key to enjoying the exams came from the amount of practice and preparation I had done. As a result my studying style is about learning and retaining as much key information about the texts as possible and using those ideas as a foundation when answering the paper.
The second half of my degree was drama based and I have a keen interest in the performing arts. This makes me think of exams as being a type of performance. The more preparation and rehearsal you do the more you can enjoy the performance of the exam and showing off your hard work. I believe it is crucial to give students tools and techniques to put into practice in a revision or exam setting to help build their confidence and encourage creative thinking.
Forming your own ideas and being able to express them clearly is crucial in English but will also help with a number of other subjects across the curriculum and moving forward into University study.

Depending on the students preferences I will be able to spend time looking at practice exam questions, focussing on how to identify what the question is asking you and how to structure an answer. My sessions can involve short writing activities such as creating a brief essay plan, writing an introduction, example paragraph or conclusion. Alternatively these tasks can be set as work to do outside of the session and lesson time discussing key themes and ideas to build a strong understanding of the chosen texts or using resources to provide practice when dealing with unseen texts.
For younger students, I can provide more interactive sessions on how to tell a story and how to answer reading comprehension questions. These sessions can be highly creative and get students excited about reading and writing.
Fundamentally, I want to provide a space where students can voice their worries or concerns. I want to make sure that there is time to work through challenges they may have met in the classroom so that they can build their confidence in the subject and go into an exam ready to show off their hard work and great ideas.
