About me

Hi, I'm Dani. I'm currently in my second year of Astrophysics at the University of Leeds. My passion for physics comes from pure childlike curiosity about the world around me, and I'm hoping to pass my excitement on to as many people as possible. Because of this, I want to go into scientific journalism when I have finished university, which combines science with my second passion: writing. My passion for physics comes from pure childlike curiosity about the world around me, and I'm hoping to pass my excitement on to as many people as possible. Because of this, I want to go into scientific journalism when I have finished university, which combines science with my second passion: writing. Since taking my English Literature A-Level, I have continued reading books and creative writing as a hobby, and would be happy to tutor in GCSE English as well. I've also done plenty of tutoring outside of MyTutor, teaching Portuguese to children as young as six, as well as helping many of my younger peers with science, maths and English during my A-Levels

I found studying for my A-Levels very challenging to begin with, and I tried so hard to revise, but it just didn't work until I found a way that works for me. Because of this, I understand the importance of tailoring tutoring and revision to the students, and I can relate strongly to those who struggle with conventional study methods. I have always had a different way of looking at things, and this translates into my way of explaining concepts. I like to use interesting or humorous metaphors and analogies to help students see things in a clearer light, and I thoroughly believe that making the tutoring sessions fun and light-hearted is the key to unlocking a student's full potential.

About my sessions

I believe there are three parts to tutoring:

The first applies to all students, and it is to ensure the student is enjoying the sessions. I believe that learning and understanding comes from passion and enjoyment, and therefore I will aim to keep sessions informal and light-hearted, with perhaps a joke or two. People remember puns or funny analogies, not someone reading a textbook out to them.

The second, most important part concerns the students understanding of a topic, and I will follow the lead of the student, to get a feel for how they learn and what they need. Everyone learns differently, and I will try and tailor the sessions to the way the student learns. One thing I will keep consistent across all students is at the end of a topic, having the student explain the key concepts back to me, using simple language, since I believe this is the key to making sure someone understands a topic. From there, I can then see any gaps in their understanding, and we can look at them in more depth.

The third, most boring part, is making sure the student is hitting all the marks in the exam, since exam boards can be very picky about choice of words. We will finish the session by going through some exam questions together, and I will make sure the student is hitting the often missed marks.
