About me

I am currently undertaking my Msc in African Development at the London School of Economics. I have a BA in History from Oxford University and I tutor History, English Literature, Politics and Sociology. Having four years years previous tutoring experience I am a firm believer in one on one teaching and have extensive experience in developing lesson plans tailored to individual students abilities and interests. My lessons emphasise interactive learning and helping students develop their problem solving abilities. I have helped students revise content, but also focus specifically on helping students develop their essay writing skills and structure and their confidence in answering exam questions. I can also offer help with Oxbridge aptitude tests and university interviews.

Questions Alex has answered

How do I structure a History essay?

Having a good structure to your History essay is very important in showing that you know what you are talking about and that you have a good grip of the material you have learnt.

Things to remember:

- You should follow a consistent arguement throughout that reaches a strong conclusion that the reader was expecting given your arguement.

-Your arguement should be well backed up using reliable and relevant statistics, facts and dates

- If you need to engage with sources- the key is not to reword what they are saying but rather explain why what they are saying is useful (or not), for example in both the opinion given in the source and its provenance. (The author's background, the context in which it was written and the audience for which it was written.)

Introduction- (Would ask for ideas of what should be included in an introduction). The strongest essays outlie the main arguement and an idea of the conclusion the student will come to in the introduction, as well as providing some context and the relevant factors.

Paragraphs- Go through each of the relevant factors explaing them in turn and relevant material. Each paragraph should be linking back to the intro and the question to support the arguement.

Conclusion- Should be a logical follow on from the body of the essay. Don't introduce new material but rather very concisely summarise the arguement you have made.
