About me

Hi,

My name’s Bridger, I’m 18 years old, and studying French and Italian at the University of Exeter. I’ve been teaching children tennis at my local club since age 12, and have been studying French and Italian since the age of 8 – I thought tutoring would be the perfect way to combine these two key passions that make up a significant part of my life.

I love languages because they offer an otherwise impossible view into a completely alien culture. My passion for French and Italian has introduced me to some of my all-time favourite films, music and works of literature. Furthermore, languages are such a great life skill, for me there’s nothing more rewarding than hearing a foreign language on the TV, or reading an article online, and being able to follow along.

Learning conjugations is the easy part, having the confidence to put them into practice is far trickier. My sessions would be spoken almost entirely in French, as I still find this extremely beneficial for anyone aiming to improve their understanding of the language. Putting the French language in a real-world context and engaging with francophone culture is what has fuelled my success in the subject. I would actively encourage my students to engage as much as possible with French culture, offering them articles and podcasts to read/listen to on a weekly basis to help make learning grammar less boring.

My online lessons will be spoken almost entirely in French and would start with a brief conversation to help the student ‘warm up’ their French, I may ask them what francophone media they have engaged with in the past week, for example. I am a strong believer in regular formative assessment, every session would also involve a short vocab test (vocab available online via Quizlet) to ensure students have a broad and polished vocabulary. At the end of every session, the student will pinpoint three specific questions/areas they feel uncertain about e.g. superlatives, relative pronouns etc. This will allow me to go away and prepare some notes, exercises, grammar that will make up the majority of the next session, to ensure it runs smoothly and no time is wasted. The session will finish with me giving the student some French media: articles, videos etc. which I will ask them to watch and prepare a 1-minute oral summary for the next session.

Student’s goals will be very much their own, our first session will involve introductions, learning weaknesses and setting their own goals. I believe that when students can set their own goals, and then work towards them, their work takes on a serious and meaningful purpose, as such all goals would be set by the student. After setting these goals, I would set out a strategy that would help the student reach their goals and following sessions would be us working toward achieving those objectives.
