About me

I have nearly completed the 1st year of my Mathematics degree at Exeter. So far, I have achieved consistently high marks.

Experience

I have tutored, on-and-off, for over a year now, with guidance from my mother, a well-established tutor, with over 30 years of teaching experience. Gradually, as I have developed my teaching skills, I have learnt to work more independently with the KS3 and GCSE students, and now essentially run the sessions myself. Also, prior to tutoring, I was responsible for running a “Maths Inspiration” club, where I and my peers worked with very able Year 7-9s to extend their Maths.

Love of Maths

I am very passionate about Maths; since Year 9 I have always been reading ahead and taking up every opportunity to extend myself beyond the curriculum, for example by participating in individual and team competitions, enthusiastically attending extracurricular Maths talks, and always asking and answering questions in lessons. So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed the degree course. I enjoy finding new ways of explaining concepts I studied many years ago and trying to find alternative approaches and explanations when a student struggles to grasp an idea.

Thus, not only am I very knowledgeable about the subject, but I also already have a reasonable amount of 1:1 experience as a tutor. I am passionate about the subject and am well-informed on the current syllabus having just completed it myself.

About my sessions

Lesson Structure

In the past, I have used starter tasks, games and activities to aid students’ learning, and have found it helpful to go through tests they have done, explaining questions they struggled on, and identifying topics to focus on in another session. Lesson Structure

In the past, I have used starter tasks, games and activities to aid students’ learning, and have found it helpful to go through tests they have done, explaining questions they struggled on, and identifying topics to focus on in another session. During the main part of the session, I not only teach methods to students, but also help them understand how they work. We go over many examples, each requiring different techniques we have covered in the session, building up to one that combines many aspects to link everything together and to remind the student what was covered. My sessions often end with a lighter summary activity or game to reinforce learning from the lesson in an engaging way.

Adapting

I will encourage students to write structured, concise notes. This includes step-by-step methods, examples and tips (for avoiding common mistakes and missing nuances). If a student finds a concept difficult, I try a different approach, as I am aware students have varied learning styles (e.g. I may draw a diagram or relate it more to the real-world). If students struggle with homework, or in the starter activity have forgotten much of what we covered, I recap the last session, and add further notes for them to copy.

I aim to make my sessions exciting and interesting, to motivate my tutees; I find falling behind at school demotivates them and boosting their enthusiasm for Maths is the key to success.
