About me

I studied French, Spanish and Music for my A-Levels and, when it came to choosing my degree, I loved all my subjects so much that I decided to study them all at the University of Birmingham! The thing I love most about these subjects is the way that they are much more than just taking notes. Languages and music are a form of communication, and if you dedicate the time, you will be able to share ideas and feelings through French and Spanish, or the unspoken language of music.

At university, I am lucky to be able to study these subjects in depth and learn about contemporary and historical challenges in France and Spain, as well as learn the intricacies of the different periods of music. In the music society I get to play my flute in the University Symphony Orchestra, and through the Student Union I have had the wonderful opportunity of being Chair of a volunteering society which takes children with behavioural difficulties to various activities.

When studying music, it is essential to listen to as much as possible to familiarise yourself with techniques used by a specific composer in a certain period. When learning about a piece of music, trying to find patterns is a great way to help remember. In terms of learning a language, the most valuable advice I could give is to practice little and often. I hope through our lessons we can start to build a routine where just 5 minutes of practice can be instilled into your daily life.

About my sessions

In our sessions I would like you to feel comfortable to say when you don’t understand – there is no such thing as a silly question! As a starter we can do a recap of the session before, followed by an explanation of what will be done in that session, then activities and exercises that we will first work through together, and then you will do some on your own. In our sessions I would like you to feel comfortable to say when you don’t understand – there is no such thing as a silly question! As a starter we can do a recap of the session before, followed by an explanation of what will be done in that session, then activities and exercises that we will first work through together, and then you will do some on your own. To finish, I will recommend some apps/websites that will help you revise. If speaking is the hardest part of learning a language for you, then we will spend at least 5 minutes of each session having general conversations in the target language to help build confidence.

To get the most out of these sessions it is important to prepare beforehand. Each lesson we can discuss what you would like to work on in the following session – after which I will go and do some research and look through some of my old notes. At the start of our first session we can establish some short- and long-term goals, so that you know what you want to achieve, and I can help you to get there. Then, at the start of each lesson, we will have a Learning Objective of what we want to achieve by the end. These focused goals and objectives are so important, as small victories can be very motivating.

Having lessons on subjects you are struggling with can sometimes feel like a chore – but I hope that if we work together, set SMART goals, and include some fun activities in our sessions, you will be able to benefit from this experience!
