About me

Expertise: EE/IA/general paper editing (received 45/45 for my ESS EE).

I am currently a third year (environmental) chemistry student (MChem) at the University of Edinburgh, and I will be the first to admit I am a science geek. Now, if science is not your thing, I hope that by the end of one of my sessions you might start to appreciate it's finesse as much as I do. I always find it difficult to describe myself, but I guess one word that would definitely describe me is determined. I am, and always have been determined to succeed- whether that takes me five minutes to achieve or two years, I will not stop. And that is a skill that I will not only apply to my tutees but will try to pass on to them as well. Giving up is never an option! In terms of teaching style, I am definitely someone who appreciates tutees taking initiative. I can only help so much as they allow me to. I have found that such sessions are much more fruitful when the tutee knows exactly what it is that they need help with, if they want to go over questions I can do that, if they want the best results it would be good to send them to me earlier, so that I can prepare answers to them- otherwise I will go over it during the session, but again, that will take away from the time they could be using to ask other questions.

About my sessions

Currently due to time constraints I am unable to do official tutoring sessions, and am only available for editing/reading over IAs/EEs or other assignments. I have found that the most effective way of doing this, is have the student express any specific concerns if they have any, and then I will read over their work and provide comments. I will of course look over it again if desired once the edits have been made.

Another form of tutoring I have found to be quite effective, is a question feedback sort of method. Students will send me questions that they are struggling with. Ideally, they would write out how they would attempt to solve it, and I would then write out a full working out with any explanations (will film a vide of it if the concept is more difficult to understand), and will then send this back to the student. I find this method is actually incredibly useful as it means time constraints are no longer an issue, we can both work around our own free times, and it also means that the student will have available study materials when it comes to exam time, as they will have a full working out of problems that they struggle with.
