About me

I'm Owen and I tutor mathematics and physics for A-level and GCSE. At school, maths was always the subject that came most naturally to me, I had a methodical way of tackling problems which suited the subject perfectly. Physics was then properly introduced to me at GCSE and I discovered how this amazing tool could be used to solve real problems and learn about the universe and how it works. At school, maths was always the subject that came most naturally to me, I had a methodical way of tackling problems which suited the subject perfectly. Physics was then properly introduced to me at GCSE and I discovered how this amazing tool could be used to solve real problems and learn about the universe and how it works. From then on I knew physics was the subject I wanted to pursue and chose to study it at the University of Warwick. I loved my degree and especially enjoyed how maths was more formally used as a tool to solve problems. The more physics I did the more I realised how important all of the mathematics I had learnt was for solving problems in science. I graduated with a 2:1 and am now studying for a masters degree in Sustainable Energy Technologies, where I hope to carry on using maths to make a difference in the world by solving problems regarding sustainability.

I've always played a lot of sport growing up, not only do I love it but I also believe it's kept me physically and mentally healthy which has helped my academic career. At university I was introduced to Ultimate Frisbee, an up and coming sport through which I've met some life-long friends and had a blast at university playing it. I'm very much into music as well. I probably spend too much of my time playing my guitar but it's a great way to relax and keep your brain working during the holidays.

About my sessions

I believe that a lot of teaching is too focused on memory and not understanding. I've found that the easiest way to do well in exams is to understand the subject at a more fundamental level and learn how to work out problems from this. From my experience of exams, if you understand a topic at a deeper level you are able to answer questions with a different format to what you're used to. You will then be able to get the highest grades by answering the questions in exams that trip most people up. My lessons will help you understand problems at a basic level, and we will then build on this knowledge to understand more complex problems. The style of teaching will depend on what suits you best. Everyone learns differently, so we can discuss the ways with which you like to learn and also explore topics in different ways as one type of explanation may compliment your current understanding better than another.

The lesson structure will first involve choosing a topic; either a topic of your choice or we can methodically go through the syllabus. I will teach you the topic using a variety of explanations, with a focus on understanding the topic at a deeper level. I will then make sure you understand the topic and then to solidify this knowledge will give you practice questions to do. I hope that from this you will understand the topics in the syllabus and will be able to answer any questions thrown at you in an exam.
