About me

Hi, I'm Darius. I’m a third-year maths student at Lancaster university. I'm really enjoying university and my subject, I play guitar in a band and enjoy doing lots of other things like reading, video games, cycling, learning languages and spending time with friends.

I love my subject because, it’s a fascinating and creative subject with endless depth. I also like the freedom that doing maths gives. When you do maths, you aren't stuck in the 3-dimensional real world....

I love my subject because, it’s a fascinating and creative subject with endless depth. I also like the freedom that doing maths gives. When you do maths, you aren't stuck in the 3-dimensional real world. You can think about infinite dimensional spaces with weird curvy geometry and study just about anything you find interesting. Or you can use the simplest most basic objects possible to construct gradually more complicated ideas until you have very powerful tools which you can use to solve problems.

I prefer to teach how I learn, focusing on understanding, rather than having students memorise algorithms. I find the best way to learn is to have a good mental image of what you are doing, try to not just rely on memorised formulae but understand why you are doing each step. Also going through lots of examples is the best way to properly remember something.

My experience of exams before uni was not always good, though now it is much better. I struggled at AS and had to retake every module during 2nd year. So, I can understand where students might be struggling as I likely had the same problems the first time round too.

About my sessions

I would prefer to structure the tutorials on a case by case basis depending on the students needs. You could bring a specific problem or past paper you need help with or a topic which you don’t understand, and I’d be happy to spend a lesson going over that.

To measure progress, I may give a quick quiz at the end of the lesson to test the topics which we would have just covered, I also think the best way to test understanding is to see if you can explain the topic to someone else...

To measure progress, I may give a quick quiz at the end of the lesson to test the topics which we would have just covered, I also think the best way to test understanding is to see if you can explain the topic to someone else, so I may also ask students to explain in their own words the topic/question which we just went over.

Overall, I can help students achieve their goals by finding exactly what they need help with and giving insight and explanation in simple terms, which hopefully will make maths seem much more intuitive and less challenging.
