About me

Hello! My name is Federica and I am a second-year PhD student in English and American Studies at the University of Manchester. Originally, I come from Rome (Italy) where I studied comparative literatures and languages at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" (BA, Modern Cultures and Languages - First; MA, Modern Philology - Distinction). Also, I am a qualified teacher of Italian as a Second Language (DITALS certificate). I've a ten year experience in private tutoring both with children, university students and adults. I am professional and reliable, enthusiastic and able to understand the learning needs of my pupils. My area of expertise are English, French and Italian languages and literatures as well as Classical civilisations and languages.

Questions Federica has answered

How can I conduct a structural and stylistic analysis of a text?

After having read the text at least a couple of times to familiarize yourself with it, divide it sections and examine how it is built: where the introdutory, core and closing arguments are, how they are connected to one another. Then, divide it in micro-sections and look for noticeable features that can tell you more about the way the author is using language and style to convey a certain idea: in particular, examine the lenght and degree of complexity of the sentences, the presence of recurring adverbs and adjectives, the vocabulary used within the whole text (formal or informal, figurative or literal) and whether there is a change from one to the other. By looking for and providing a critical discussion of those noticeable features your textual analysis will be great!
