About me

Hi, my name is Tilman. I am a native speaker in German. I was born in Germany and did my A-Levels and my undergraduate degree in Germany. Currently, I am doing a PhD in International Relations at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. I am a very experienced tutor on mytutor with more than 240 hours of tutorial experience. Over the course of my teaching experiences on mytutor, I have developed a detailed syllabus for my students who need support in learning German. I have written many documents myself which explain most of the relevant grammatical issues in German. I will use these documents in my tutorials. Moreover, I incorporate speaking, reading and writing exercises into my tutorials. Being a native speaker in German, I am able to help you not only with the right pronunciation of German words, but also with the German sentence structure and word order. I also use reading and writing exercises from different German course books that I bought for my tutorials. My philosophy in tutoring German is that you should speak German as much as possible during the tutorials. As a native speaker, I will always be able to help you with finding the right word or expression. For me, it is important that you see the tutorial as a unique opportunity to speak German to someone who is a native speaker in a face-to-face tutorial.

Besides my experience in tutoring German, I can also help you with learning Politics, International Relations and Global Politics.

About my sessions

I will structure tutorials according to the things you would like to focus on. I will ask you what you would like to achieve prior to the first tutorial. For example, if you would like to focus on certain aspects of the German grammar, I will structure our tutorials around these issues. I will also incorporate different exercises for the German grammar. If you would like to focus more on conversation in German, I will prepare some questions about a certain topic which we have agree upon in advance. I will use these questions in order to start a conversation in German. I think that the best way for learning a language is to speak as much as possible. If you do not know a certain German word, I will help you with this, and I will also help you with the correct pronunciation and spelling of words. If you would like to focus on writing texts in German, I will ask you to write a short text about a certain topic in German as a homework. I will read this text prior to our next tutorial, and then we will talk about this text and my feedback during the tutorial. I will also give feedback about your progress. One way to measure your progress will be your abilility to apply the rules of the German grammar. Another way will be your ability to speak freely without making mistakes. Another one will be the number of words you know in German.

Very good tutorial as usual. Today Tilman and I covered a past reading paper in preparation for my exam next Thursday which also helped for preparation of my Reading and Listening exams on Monday.

Amazing tutorial as always. Tonight we practiced for my speaking exam tomorrow and I feel a lot more comfortable than I was this time last year.

Questions Tilman has answered

How do you structure an essay in German?

The first important thing for writing any kind of essay is to formulate an adequate question you want to address in the essay. What do you want to demonstrate? Why is this question interesting and why is it important? This question should then be included in your introduction.

The introduction of your essay should not only address the research question and the argument you propose, but also the structure of the rest of the essay. What will you do in each section of the essay and how are these sections connected with each other? You will experience over the writing of an essay that the introduction changes over the course of the writing process. You will add and delete certain aspects of your introduction, or you might even re-formulate parts of your question and your argument.

An example for such a question in the context of a book analysis might be: Inwiefern stellt das Buch ein Beispiel für einen Text aus der Epoche der Romantik dar? Welche sprachlichen und stilistischen Mittel verwendet der Autor/die Autorin, die auf die Epoche der Romanik hinweisen?

In order to elaborate on this question, you might give a short overview of the structure of your essay and your methods: In einem ersten Schritt werde ich die sprachlichen und stilistischen Eigenschaften der Romanik darlegen, um sie dann in einem zweiten Schritt auf das Buch anzuwenden.

This structure enables you to outline your argument and the approach you will undertake in order to elaborate on the same.
