About me

Hi! I'm Poppy and I am a first year lawyer at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

Law is fascinating as it encompasses history, philosophy and language analysis skills but differs from these subjects in that it affects everyone and changes every single day.

I have taken many exams over the last few years. At GCSE I achieved 11 A*s and 3 As, at AS level I received 4 (A is the highest grade at this level) and got the highest grade in the year in 3 subjects, and at A2 I got 3...

I have taken many exams over the last few years. At GCSE I achieved 11 A*s and 3 As, at AS level I received 4 (A is the highest grade at this level) and got the highest grade in the year in 3 subjects, and at A2 I got 3 A*s and a B. I am predicted a first in my legal studies at Cambridge. I am also a choral scholar, I play the piano to diploma level, I am sub-editor of the university newspaper: Varsity, a writer for the Cambridge law magazine, Per incuriam, and a long-distance runner. Life is busy but I wouldn't have it any other way!

I have tutored for 5 years now in a range of subjects including English, History, Classics and Oxbridge prep and I am incredibly passionate about it. I will help my students improve by giving them weekly tasks which increase in intensity and providing extensive feedback on each one. I have improved students grades from Cs-As/A*s as well as helped 3 students get into Oxbridge. I would be delighted to tutor you!

About my sessions

The structure of my lessons will depend on the subject the student has chosen to be tutored in; however, if I was to tutor an Oxbridge prep lesson, I would start by asking the student some interview-style questions and then provide bespoke feedback on their performance. I would then give my own thoughts on the questions so that students could see alternative ways of answering them. I would then focus on technique for admissions tests. I would then give my own thoughts on the questions so that students could see alternative ways of answering them. I would then focus on technique for admissions tests. I’ll provide carefully selected past paper questions and would ask students to plan a response with me, pushing their analysis skills to the boundaries of their ability and then giving them improvements, as well as providing them with sample answers. The lesson would close with interview advice such as how to avoid falling into typical 'interview traps'.

I will measure progress through doing mini-assessments. If I were tutoring an examined subject such as English A Level, I require students to submit their recent essay feedback so that we can assess their progress and act on any improvements.

Several things are important to encouraging learning. Firstly, students should be praised alongside given improvements so that they can see palpable improvement, motivating them to work harder. Secondly, they should have hard but attainable targets to fuel their ambition and a sense of fulfilment once they are achieved. Lastly, the tutoring sessions themselves should be intellectually stimulating, encouraging students to keep learning.
