About me

Hello!!! I am a third year studying French & Spanish at university. Within that, I focus primarily on French, Spanish, and Spanish American literature - which I love - and I'm always working on my skills in both languages, which is vital for me to get the best out of the books. Hello!!! I am a third year studying French & Spanish at university. Within that, I focus primarily on French, Spanish, and Spanish American literature - which I love - and I'm always working on my skills in both languages, which is vital for me to get the best out of the books. I tried many ways of preparing for exams when I was at school - some, I eventually learnt, were way more effective than others - and think that students need to know what is expected of them to achieve certain grades or to do their best, so that they don't miss the mark but also so that they don't drive themselves up the wall by trying to cover everything. I liked my university applications process as it was a chance to find out and explore what I personally liked in my subjects - my favourite bits - and think that this kind of excitement and curiosity is what can help you to write an honest, genuine personal statement and will also make you stand out. You are all so capable of that, but sometimes it takes a reminder that you don't have to fit yourself into any mould - what universities want to see is you!

Besides literature my other interest is logic, and I think that the same sense of curiosity is one of the best tools for getting through maths and further maths A-levels (which can be hard, but are never impossible!). I would also love to help anybody needing a boost with literature, film, history and culture topics in any stage of English or MFL studies.

Sessions always need to revolve around the student. My main interest is encouraging the student to form their own interests and passions within the subject, by encouraging their strengths and resolving any limitations, so that they're able to move forwards and feel like they are the ones holding the reins. I believe that when you make somebody feel like they can have a personal connection to their subject, they are equipped and incentivised to do really well in the qualification. My default structure will centre around discussions of topics, working through difficult areas to identify and remedy the problems, and also by providing extensions of the student's strong areas to remind them what they are capable of and to prepare them for any further studies in the subject. This 2-sided approach of furthering strengths and addressing weaknesses means that when progress is measured, by past paper style questions if an exam is imminent or by structured discussion (in an interview/debate style if the student is ready for that or by asking them to explain something to me as if I were the student), it is never demoralising, as it gives them an opportunity to take pride in their strengths as well as in their improvement upon their weaknesses.

Lily has been invaluable to my daughter's MLAT and Oxford interview preparation; not only is she great at tutoring, she also dedicates time outside of the lessons to search for interesting articles etc that may be of use!
