Hi!

I’m Gayathri and I’m currently in my fourth year of studying Medicine at the University of Birmingham. Science has always been a passion of mine and Medicine is a way for me to pursue this as well as using my skills to help others. Tutoring is another way for me to do so, as well as brush up on my own knowledge. I have learnt a lot from the Medical school application process which I can pass on to others and give tips on things that worked for me and things I would have done differently. I also have experience tutoring 11+ Maths for 2 years as well as mentoring GCSE students during my A level years. There are a lot of things I can learn from students, it’s not always the other way round. With my enthusiastic nature, I will help students learn at their own pace and encourage them to enjoy the process.

When I’m not swamped with work, my hobbies include relaxing with a good book or drawing. On the weekends, I enjoy playing badminton as part of the badminton society at university.

About my sessions

In the first session with a student, the best starting point would be to discuss what they are hoping to achieve during the course of the tutorials. Once we have discussed this, I can then plan each tutorial which will be small steps to achieving their goal. In the first session with a student, the best starting point would be to discuss what they are hoping to achieve during the course of the tutorials. Once we have discussed this, I can then plan each tutorial which will be small steps to achieving their goal. At the start of each session, it’s important to go through the objectives which can then be reviewed at the end to test understanding. Having a checklist of objectives will also be a measure of progress as each point can be ticked off once the student feels confident with it. Later on, if the student wishes to review something from the list, that can also be done easily.

In terms of studying for exams, the best way of learning is to practice. This is especially true with Maths as it is not a subject you can cram revise for. From my personal experience, going through questions from past papers or textbooks will help identify what you already know and what you may be struggling with. From my previous tutoring experience, being encouraging when students face problems and being patient really helps them look forward to learning. It is important to make sure students do not become discouraged by difficult topics and instead, get them to make a note of these topics so we can work through it together. I believe tutoring should be a joint effort between the student and tutor and I would like the students to understand this as well.
