As Instrumental and Senior Choral Scholar at The Queen’s College Oxford, I have seized opportunities to play with the main university orchestras and lead various chamber ensembles, as well as sing with Queen’s Choir and Schola Cantorum.

Applying for university is a process that requires full commitment and enthusiasm for one's subject. The quality of one's personal statement is paramount to a successful appication; I will help students to structure and word it sensibly, but also to convey the student's personality and potential as this is what will make an impression on professors. Different perspectives and opinions on a personal statement is very insightful. One of the main ways of achieving a good personal statement is by practising. I think I produced 10 drafts before I finalised mine! The same principal applies to exam preparation.

About my sessions

I would provide the students with exemplar answers and sample material; continuous practice is invaluable as it ensures familiarity with the exam process and the style of questions. Music lessons will be designed to guide you through the learning process as opposed to providing you with answers. Each lesson will begin with a recap of the previous session. Music lessons will be designed to guide you through the learning process as opposed to providing you with answers. Each lesson will begin with a recap of the previous session. Music is about creation and invention, so I advocate an imaginative approach to academic work. Academic music: listen to a piece of music or look at a score and tell me what is interesting to you. Then we will think about how the musical structure makes it interesting; we will listen to the music again or study a score more in-depth. I might ask you to listen or look for a specific musical feature and tell me its implications; this will be helpful when structuring essays, separating melodic features from harmonic, rhythmic, etc. We will then practise writing skills and I might ask you to produce a paragraph that focusses on and interprets a certain musical feature. For music theory I would encourage the student to identify a particular musical aspect from listening to or examining a score. I will provide practice questions and sample answers for theory questions and essays, alongside lists of terminology and common musical features. I am very happy to have face-to-face sessions and mark work. I can also advise on performance preparation, musical interpretation and technical issues for violin and voice.
