About me

Hi! I’m Harriet and I’m studying English Literature at the University of Birmingham. I didn't always have the passion for English that I do now, so if you dread writing essays, going to English classes or even opening a book - I've been there, and hopefully I can make English a little bit more bearable for you…even enjoyable! My main interests lie in Shakespeare and novels, but I thoroughly enjoy studying and tutoring all forms of literature. Throughout my time at secondary school and college I would often work with other students, mentoring 1-1 and helping with any problems they had. I have dealt with a vast range of issues including trouble with analysing quotations, tackling unseen texts, and structuring paragraphs and essays. I also understand that it’s difficult to know where to start when revising for English exams, and I have helped many students come up with effective revision methods that work for their individual learning style. I like to use a combination of mind maps and colours, as well as lots of writing practice! Don’t feel embarrassed to ask any questions you may have – I really have heard them all. I am here to help you so together we can work for solutions that will help you fulfil your potential. Don't hesitate to contact me through MyTutor and I will sure to get back to you as quickly as possible. I look forward to meeting you!

About my sessions

What's most important for me is that our sessions together are tailored to you and your individual needs. Once I've understood the areas of English which you find most difficult, I'll spend some time before our tutorials to prepare exercises we can work through together, as well as some exemplar responses to guide you in the right direction. You are also most welcome to bring school work and past papers to our sessions if there is anything in particular you would like to work on....

What's most important for me is that our sessions together are tailored to you and your individual needs. Once I've understood the areas of English which you find most difficult, I'll spend some time before our tutorials to prepare exercises we can work through together, as well as some exemplar responses to guide you in the right direction. You are also most welcome to bring school work and past papers to our sessions if there is anything in particular you would like to work on. I will encourage you to give some honest feedback at the end of each session - I want to know if what we did together was helpful and enjoyable to you, whether you want similar structured tutorials in the future or if there's something you would like me to do differently. I promise to take all your comments on board and structure future tutorials accordingly so that we can make the most of our sessions together. If it is something which you think would be useful to you, I can set you some timed writing or other short tasks for us to discuss when we meet again - I understand the immense work load that you will have at GCSE and A-Level so I assure you that these tasks won't take you more than 20 minutes (and of course are in no way compulsory!). I look forward to hearing from you soon, and to have a free session to get to know each other a bit better.

Harriet is a great tutor. She has helped me really improve my writing confidence and my ability to recognise literacy techniques and apply them within my writing. I would really recommend her tutoring for those who tend to dislike like English but especially want to bring their grades up.
