About me

Hi! I’m Harriet and I’m a 4th year English Literature at the University of Birmingham. I didn't always have the passion for English that I do now, so if you dread writing essays, going to English classes or even opening a book - I've been there, and hopefully I can make English a little bit more bearable for you…even enjoyable! My main interests lie in Shakespeare and novels, but I thoroughly enjoy studying and tutoring all forms of literature. Throughout my time at secondary school and college I would often work with other students, mentoring 1-1 and helping with any problems they had. I now have 3 years of tutoring experience on MyTutor! I've helped students with a vast range of issues such as analysing quotations, tackling unseen texts, and structuring paragraphs and essays. I also understand that it’s difficult to know where to start when revising for English exams, so I can guide you through effective revision methods that work for your individual learning style. I like to use a combination of mind maps and colours, as well as lots of writing practice! Don’t feel embarrassed to ask any questions you may have – I really have heard them all. I am here to help you so together we can work for solutions that will help you fulfil your potential. Don't hesitate to contact me through MyTutor and I will sure to get back to you as quickly as possible. I look forward to meeting you!

About my sessions

What's most important for me is that our sessions together are tailored to you and your individual needs. Once I've understood the areas of English which you find most difficult, I'll spend some time before our lessons to prepare exercises we can work through together, as well as some exemplar responses to guide you in the right direction. You are also most welcome to bring school work and past papers to our sessions if there is anything in particular you would like to work on. I...

I will encourage you to give some honest feedback at the end of each session - I want to know if what we did together was helpful and enjoyable to you, whether you want similar lessons in the future, or if there's something you would like me to do differently. Some of my students ask me to set them small homework tasks in between sessions to practise their writing even more. I'm happy to do this, but homework is in no way compulsory! I look forward to our free 15 minute meeting to get to know each other better!

I did struggle a lot but she really helped me. She is so kind! I can't wait to do more lessons and for her to help me improve in English language and she will push you which helps and she is very patient if you need to think about your answer.

My son ( Year 8 ) has had 7 lessons with Harriet so far. I am so pleased with how his confidence has improved . Harriet is very patient with my son who has High Functioning Autism - Asperger's. She has tailored lessons to my son and stretches him that little bit further in each lesson. He used to have such a negative attitude towards English and I can't believe that over the course of the last 2 months , he actually looks forward to lessons with Harriet ! Highly recommended.

For my first lesson, Harriet really understood what I needed to work on and she explained everything very well with a clear structure to her lesson. She is also a very friendly and enjoyable person to be tutored by. Thank you, Harriet!
