About me

Hi! I’m Emily. I’m currently reading English Language and Literature at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford and I’m in my first year. Hi! I’m Emily. I’m currently reading English Language and Literature at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford and I’m in my first year. I’ve been passionate about English for my whole academic career; from reading brilliant novels to technical linguistic analysis, I love all elements of my subject. At A-Level, I studied English Literature, Classical Civilisation, Early History and French. I found it extremely difficult to narrow down my choice of four subjects to only one, having found a unique love for all four of them. Luckily, English is a hugely interdisciplinary subject which allows me to further my knowledge within the subjects I took at A-Level and enjoy teaching others about them, too. I was pleased with my A-Level results and am passionate about demonstrating to students that through hard work and genuine interest, one can reap fantastic results. I am currently the Music, Arts and Drama Officer at Lady Margaret Hall, which has taught me great deals about communication and the ability to be pragmatic and resourceful. As well as mentoring at school and college, I have also spent some time in Borneo where I helped teach English at a local Sunday school, which was an experience I will never forget. Tutoring would be an opportunity for me to impart not only knowledge, but love for all four subjects, ensuring that every student is given an opportunity to grow in confidence and ability in a fun and engaging way that suits them.

About my sessions

No two students are the same, and the same logic goes for my lessons and techniques. No two students are the same, and the same logic goes for my lessons and techniques. I plan to consider each student’s preferred and most effective working method and utilise it to ensure, even outside of sessions, that their revision is effective and productive. My sessions will focus on what each student finds most challenging about the subject, and subsequent methods of overcoming these hurdles and forging a real enjoyment of the work that will eventually translate to examiners in an exam situation. For English, History and Classics, deep knowledge of key set texts, sources and artefacts is vital, and this is what my sessions will focus on until exam revision begins, during which the most productive method is writing essay-plans. My technique with French would differ in its closer focus on the intricacies on grammar and language, and the earlier application of past papers for revision, as I believe practice, especially with a foreign language, is the best way to improve. Despite this, the individual needs of the student would always take precedence, their own areas of weakness my first topic of focus. I’d like to take some of the stress out of academic works and exams, helping students find their own feet so they are able to become effective individual workers outside of sessions. I look forward to exploring every student’s point of view and helping them flourish in subjects I love and I know they can too!
