About me

Hi there! My name is Zac and I am currently a 2nd year student at St John's College, University of Cambridge, reading French and German. I can still remember stepping into French and German classes for the first time as an intrepid 11 year and falling in love with languages immediately, and have never looked back since! I will be embarking on my Year Abroad next year, and cannot wait to immerse myself in the cultures of these beautiful countries. I have prior experience teaching children,...

I can still remember stepping into French and German classes for the first time as an intrepid 11 year and falling in love with languages immediately, and have never looked back since! I will be embarking on my Year Abroad next year, and cannot wait to immerse myself in the cultures of these beautiful countries. I have prior experience teaching children, and helping out others with German/French questions; as such, I know I will be able to help you improve your languages.

It's not just languages that I love, however; I am a huge sports fan, and am especially into tennis and football. I have also watched enough TV to last a lifetime, so can always recommend German and French shows/films for practice!

About my sessions

It goes without saying that students' needs vary from case to case. I therefore think it is imperative to first ask the student what they wish to work on and what it is that they struggle with the most , and then to work from there. Having ascertained what areas the lessons should focus on, I will help students improve by coming up with sentences to translate and exercises to do with them beforehand, and then go through these questions in a patient, comprehensive manner. I will also encourage students to practice what they have learnt by coming up with their own sentences, watching clips online and/or answering questions in their own time that I can take a look at.

Progress can be challenging to chart when it comes to languages, however I always remember my former German teacher telling me that the best way to test comprehension is by getting the student to explain and teach topics themselves, and by explaining grammatical structures to me, for example, getting them to demonstrate understanding .

I will also make my lessons as enjoyable as possible; languages are and should be very fun to learn, and hopefully this will encourage active engagement.
