Hey! My name is Katherine, I'm 20 years old and currently about to start my final year at Newcastle University studying a BA in English Literature with Creative Writing. I've always enjoyed learning and feel extremely proud to have made it to University. After I graduate, I hope to go on to study for a PDCE in order to become a secondary school teacher: I'm incrediby passionate about teaching and mentoring as I feel like everyone deserves a chance to achieve their potential and set themselves up well for their future. I really enjoy my course- I remember being in year 5 and telling my Mum that I wanted to be an author, and the fact that I'm pursuing that as well as a love for reading makes me feel incredibly honoured and excited about my education. I particularly enjoy Victorian and Shakespearean literature, Frankenstein being my favourite book of all time, and I also have acquired a love for watching and writing theatre and film during my degree. While I do still have ambitions to write, my first passion is being able enter a career where I can be a kind, patient, helpful and enthusiastic mentor for young people. I think everyone has potential to unlock within themselves, and I would love to help people be able to push themselves and achieve their absolute best through support and encouragement.

About my sessions

With me as your tutor, you can expect personalised guidance for areas of support that you need. I will help identify areas you might feel weaker on, targeting help towards things like: gaining a better understanding on how to decipher what a question is asking of you, deciding how to structure an essay, confidence in key vocabulary and how to utilise it, and how to analyse an extract. Tasks would include going through worksheets on literary devices, going over key points in texts, working through a short extract, planning essays and talking through feedback from completed essays. Learning techniques are different for everybody. Personally, I like writing notes that are colour co-ordinated and then making cue cards from memory, as well as doing essay plans regularly for past paper questions. However, each way of learning is valid and it is completely normal that a way that worked for me might not work for someone else. Because of this, I will always remain flexible and teach in a way that is specific to how you best learn, whether it's through note taking, mind maps, verbal recall or memory exercises. My main aim is to boost confidence through one-on-one support in order to help you feel like you can sit an exam or hand in an essay and do the very best you are capable of, and feel proud of yourself when you get your results.
