About me

During my Fine Art education/sociological studies, I became fascinated with the part images play in politics, society and history. Since starting my studies at Cambridge, I have been taught that history is less about learning facts and more about how we construct our understanding of the past as accurately as possible. In an age of fake news, distorted perceptions and dangerous propaganda, it has never been more important to “seek the truth” (my College’s motto).

My perception of Cambridge as an institution for the elite changed drastically during my time on Sutton Trust Summer School. My journey here from a low-income household was hardly straight forward! Indeed, personal circumstances resulted in me applying twice, receiving UCAS offers on both occasions. No one had ever applied to study History of Art from my school since it is (wrongly) seen as part of a rich person’s realm, therefore I never received any form of mock

interview. I would love to share the knowledge and expertise I gained from doing the entire applications process twice, in order to help others achieve the social mobility I have experienced.

About my sessions

Looking to previous eras allows a better understanding of the present, and therefore history can never be seen in isolation from sociology or as purely theoretical. Subjects only captivate me when they relate to my experiences. There is nothing more boring than being bombarded with abstract information! Looking to previous eras allows a better understanding of the present, and therefore history can never be seen in isolation from sociology or as purely theoretical. Subjects only captivate me when they relate to my experiences. There is nothing more boring than being bombarded with abstract information! Therefore, I get to know students interests as well as possible, in order to relate material from the syllabus to more familiar topics. I find this makes content more memorable as the student continues to think critically outside the classroom. I structure lessons around what the student is most struggling on. This is identified by frequent exam practise; having taken 15 hours of exams in the space of 3 days this year, I believe that making exams familiar is the best way to reduce nerves and maximise performance.

All through school, I was told to work out whether I was an auditory, visual or kinetic learner. However, the longer I study, the more I realise a multi-sensory approach is the most effective. Whilst I recognise that everyone learns in different ways and tailor lessons accordingly, I also believe that engaging in as many different techniques as possible prevents material from becoming tedious.
