About me

Hi! My name is Adriana and I am currently in my 4th year of Medicine at Newcastle University. Medicine is an intense course, however I have thoroughly enjoyed studing it. Human biology is one of my favourite topics and it has been captivating studing the human body in depth! Throughout my studies I have realised the importance of adapting learning to meet your individual needs, everyone varies and learns differently even on the same course! So I will ensure that my teaching methods are adapted to the students desires and needs. I have participated in the Medical Education Society, where I have taught lower year medical students some revision topics and provided them with exam help and tips. Seeing their confidence grow was extremely rewarding. This sparked my passion for teaching, which is why I would love to tutor! I also understand how incredibly overwhelming applying to medical school can be, and I would be more than happy in giving advice on personal statements, UKCAT and other application process advice!

About my sessions

I am very flexible in teaching styles and can adapt quickly to what the students needs! I think that it's important to target the students weaknesses and work through them to increase knowledge and confidence. I think understanding the topic as well as exam techniques is vital, therefore after the teaching session I would encourage going through an exam question! I will ensure that topic has met the specification requirements and the sillybus, and plan the sessions in advance. I believe that consolidation of the work is key, so on topics the student found particularly tricky, I would also incoporate a small quiz in the session to test knowledge gained from previous sessions.

Questions Adriana has answered

What is Sickle Cell anaemia and what are the risks of having it?

Sickle cell anaemia is a genetically inherited condition which results in a change of the shape of the red blood cells. This can result in some complications. The altered shape of the red blood cells increases the risk of the cells sticking together and then as a result cause a blockage of a capillary. When a capillary is blocked, the blood flow through that capillary is reduced and so less oxygen is being delivered. Some of the serious complications that can result are a stroke or a heart attack, if the blockage happens in the brain or heart, however it can occur anywhere in the body. Sickle cell anaemia is a genetically inherited condition which results in a change of the shape of the red blood cells. Why is it important to control body temperature?

Controlling body temperature is important due to multiple reasons. Firstly, it is important to maintain the temprature at which enzymes work optimally. Secondly, it allows for the chemical reactions in the body to happen at the fastest speed. Lastly, it will prevent damage to cells, an example of this being that if the body temprature is too high, the enzymes can denature. Controlling body temperature is important due to multiple reasons.
