About me

Hi I'm Mark, a mathematics undergraduate at the University of Cambridge. I love maths because of two reasons. Firstly, the versatility and power of it is incredible. From the art of creating and breaking codes and ciphers to getting a plane to fly itself in the correct direction. Secondly, and rather contradictory to my first reason, is the beauty of the links between topics which at first may seem completely different, but after some thought are really the same problems in different disg...

From the art of creating and breaking codes and ciphers to getting a plane to fly itself in the correct direction. Secondly, and rather contradictory to my first reason, is the beauty of the links between topics which at first may seem completely different, but after some thought are really the same problems in different disguises. It is also satisfying when solving a difficult problem or revealing a neat result.

When not doing maths, I like endurance sports, such as running or cycling. If I'm not training for a half marathon, I'm probably playing my cello somewhere.

About my sessions

I believe that the key to learning maths is to have a good understanding of why one is learning a topic. People often ask what the "point" of learning maths is at school (which is an essay for another time as there are many); without a purpose of why, a student will have no motivation. I believe that the key to learning maths is to have a good understanding of why one is learning a topic. People often ask what the "point" of learning maths is at school (which is an essay for another time as there are many); without a purpose of why, a student will have no motivation. I hope to motivate students by providing direct applications of the topic being studied, whilst also trying to inspire students to want to know more by understanding which part of the large tree of mathematics they are looking at. This will also help students to see links between content which may have been seen before which can lead to increased understanding, on top of expanding their academic culture.

Unfortunately, I also realise that the GCSE and A level examination systems require some training and drilling. So, my aim during a typical lesson would be to ensure I start and end with an overview of why this topic is so important to learn, whilst still ensuring content is clearly and fully taught in the middle.
