I am a first year English Literature student at Durham University. I've always been incredibly enthusiastic about English, having studied it for many years at GCSE and A Level, I know just how difficult it can be and so I hope I can impart some of the tips and tricks I have learnt to help you with any aspect of the course- be it essay writing or literary analysis. I also study modules of Spanish language and literature at uni and so I'm available to help GCSE Spanish students looking to improve their grammar knowledge, reading or writing- I can even be your conversation partner to develop your confidence.
I am an incredibly patient and organised person. I've been through all these exams myself and experienced the same anxiety and questions that you have, I'm here to help you in any way that is useful to you.
The lessons themselves will be based on addressing the issues that would most benefit you, this could be working through the texts together so you have a solid understanding of the themes, devices or techniques of that author. If essay writing is your weak point we will go through the best way to structure an essay and write paragraphs together until you feel confident in your technique. All my lessons will be pre-planned so I can collect material in the form of quotes and critical essays to ensure that your understanding is based on evidence you can use in your essays. Most importantly, I hope the sessions will encourage you to develop a passion for the texts you are studying, because if you enjoy the novel or poem, it's much easier to write about it.

The subjunctive tense is used in Spanish to express wishes, desires, doubt, requests, impersonal statements and emotions. Some key uses are:
Negative opinions- for example 'no pienso que' and 'no creo que' trigger the subjunctive in the verb that follows
No pienso que sea importante (I don't think it is important)
Requests or recommentations- for example when you are telling someone else to do something you would use the subjunctive
'quiero que me compres estos zapatos' (I want you to buy me these shoes)
Impersonal statements- these are statements that give an opinion
'es importante que vayas a colegio' (it is important that you go to school)

In a Greek tragedy, we expect to see the fall of a tragic hero. This is done by the hero having a tragic flaw (called hamartia in Greek terms). In many cases, the tragic hero falls as a resulf of 'hubris' (this word means excessive pride). After being set up for the fall, we expect a moment of 'anagnorisis' in which the hero makes an important discovery, often realising the error of their ways. As a result, the audience is expected to feel a sense of 'catharsis' (a sense of their own emotions being purged by watching the trials and tribulations of the hero), allowing the audience to leave the theatre feeling refreshed.see more
The most effective method for writing essay paragraphs is to follow a '6 point paragraph' structure. This type of paragraph will allow you to hit all of hte assessment objectives that the examiners are looking for. For example, we would start with a strong topic sentence that outlines the point you are going to make, then we would provide evidence in the form of a quote, next you would analyse the quote (e.g. the language, syntax or structure). After this, you would give some contextual information (this could be historical or in the form of a critical quote), next you need to interpret this (e.g. take a critical viewpoint or explain your own interpretation of the point you are tyring to make) and finally conclude the paragraph with a sentence that links your argument to the authorial purpose (e.g. why has the author included this element in their work and what does it achieve?)see more
