About me

Hello, I’m Tom, I’ve just finished my 2nd year of medicine, studying in Birmingham. The hands-on nature of medicine completely fascinates me, with the ability to apply my learning from lectures and seminars over to examinations and procedures, something that will never grow boring. The sheer amount there is to learn in the world of medicine is another reason I love the subject, there will always be something I haven’t yet discovered.

Having recently achieved A*A*A* and a 767 average in my A levels and UKCAT respectively, has put me in good stead for studying at university. I believe my strong academic record positions me perfectly to tutor students through these undoubtedly strenuous exams at an important crossroads in their lives.

I have previous experience of tutoring my peers maths at GCSE and have been teaching 1st year medics in Basic Life Support (including CPR) over the past academic year. Having worked with many different students at varying stages in education has meant I have numerous ways to teach, ensuring that no matter your learning style, I am able to help.

In my free time I enjoy playing football as well as running and cycling. I am on the committee for university’s friends of MSF group and enjoy raising awareness of this charity along with the life-changing work they carry out.

About my sessions

Before any lesson, I will ask students what was not understood in previous sessions along with their goals for the future session. This goal setting and focussing on weak areas aids me in setting out a brief plan of what to cover in the time available and how to really secure your grade, no matter what you are aiming for. Most importantly however, I will either find or prepare relevant questions to test your understanding of the content at the end of the lesson to give us both an idea of your...

Before any lesson, I will ask students what was not understood in previous sessions along with their goals for the future session. This goal setting and focussing on weak areas aids me in setting out a brief plan of what to cover in the time available and how to really secure your grade, no matter what you are aiming for. Most importantly however, I will either find or prepare relevant questions to test your understanding of the content at the end of the lesson to give us both an idea of your strengths, weaknesses and to assess progress. I implore students to be inquisitive, determined and not afraid to ask questions, which I hope my outgoing and friendly nature allows, so you get the most out of sessions!

I can adapt my teaching methods to your specific needs or try a variety to see what works for you. I am a firm believer in visual learning aids, specifically using diagrams/ flowcharts to solidify learning. I prefer breaking down topics into smaller chunks, as I find this makes topics less daunting and more manageable. As such, I use mind-maps a lot when revising for exams. I am happy to offer further advice when it comes to revision strategies.

However, primarily I aim to ensure every student feels confident in tackling whichever exam they are facing so that they can go forward with success and a belief in themselves.
