About me

Hi, I'm John and I study Classics at Trinity College Dublin. I first got into that area when I started studying Latin at school in year 8. I turned out to have something of a knack for it and that got me reading into ancient history and literature. I kept it up and decided to have a crack at Greek in Year 12, when I taught myself the GCSE syllabus which set me up very handily for university. Having only two people doing A-Level Latin at the school, we were only afforded one lesson a week instead of the usual four. This meant I had no choice but to carry out an awful lot of independent study which fostered an eager interest in the subject. Having achieved an A* in my A-Level Latin, I realised how important that study is. So as a tutor my primary goal would be to have my tutees so interested in what they’re studying that they conduct their own study outside both school lessons and mine, on which I’d be very eager to guide them. Certainly in Latin any reading can only be beneficial, but, knowing the syllabus very well, owning practically every textbook there is, I will ensure that any and all learning will be directed ultimately towards exam success. In Maths and Physics (in both of which subjects I gained an A at A-Level) I will keep the students firmly rooted in the syllabus and will be very happy to demystify any areas in these subjects and keep them engaged throughout lessons.

About my sessions

It's very important for the pupil to dictate the general direction of the lesson, especially in A-Level Latin and Classical Civilisation, so I'd like to hear questions from the tutee and then develop on the relevant contexts from there. The first thing I'll do in a lesson is ask if there was anything from school that they didn't understand or needed some clarification on and explain it to them. If nothing comes up, I’ll have a discussion with them about the nuances of the topi...

If nothing comes up, I’ll have a discussion with them about the nuances of the topic. In Maths and Physics I'll then move onto the next topic on the syllabus and give them a solid foundation for future lessons thereon.  As exams approach I'll ask tutees about the past papers they may have done and what concepts they may have struggled with. I'll then set them relevant problems and talk the pupil through them. In Latin and Greek I'll give the students advice on what texts would be appropriate to their skill levels and grammatical knowledge. In Classical Civilisation I'll try to explain the contexts and purposes behind the set texts and particular passages. I'll also be sure to make use of the recommended course books to provide the necessary structure.
