Hi, I’m Emily and I’ve just finished a degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Oxford, majoring in Neuroscience. I have over 5 years of tutoring experience and have delivered workshops on the BMAT, personal statements and Oxbridge interviews, and I am able to offer guidance in all these areas to my students on My Tutor.

As well as achieving a 2:1 (borderline 1st) class in my degree, I have 11 A*s at GCSE and straight As at A Level. I have a keen interest in all things biology-related and genuine love of teaching, and I am dedicated to ensuring that all my students get the grade they deserve, no matter their starting point. As well as teaching content from the syllabus, I will also help you figure out a strategy that best suits you when it comes to revision and exam prep – there’s a lot to learn for - especially in a subject like Biology! - so identifying what’s most effective for you is crucial for exam success. As I’m sure you’re aware, just knowing the content won’t always cut it when it comes to exams, so I’ll also make sure you are well prepared in exam technique and able to apply your knowledge to hit the top marks and ace your exams!

About my sessions

Everybody has a different style of learning that is best suited to them, so I like to tailor my lessons to each student rather than taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

This ensures we can hit the ground running and get the most out of the teaching time. I will also compile notes and resources for use i...

I’ll always ask my students to let me know which topics they’d like to cover in advance of a lesson; this can be anything from filling in gaps to covering an entire topic. This ensures we can hit the ground running and get the most out of the teaching time. I will also compile notes and resources for use in the lesson, which I can send to the student if required. A typical session will then begin with a short discussion and/or a few practice questions to gauge the student’s ability in a particular area; this is used as a starting point for the rest of the lesson. I’m very approachable and patient, and I want my students to always feel comfortable and confident to stop me at any point to ask questions so that they get the most out of having one-on-one teaching. In order to encourage learning and measure progress, I will also set targets and the occasional test so that students will be able to see a measurable difference in the topics covered in our lessons.

Experience has taught me that an active approach to learning is the best way to learn quickly (and make sure the information is going in, not just being ‘absorbed’!). I’m a firm believer in keeping things simple; if you can’t explain something to a 7-year-old then you don’t understand it well enough!
