About me

I've recently finished my undergraduate degree in English and German. Nonetheless, I remain passionate about learning and think that tutoring would be the perfect way to stay in touch with my language and literature studies.

Having attended a north-east comprehensive and subsequently gained a place at Oxford University, I know what it takes to be successful when it comes to GCSEs and A-Levels. Equally, I can communicate effectively with people from various backgrounds.

I learned German through schooling, as opposed to having German-speaking friends or family, so I know the challenges faced by German learners and ways of overcoming them.

I'm a big advocate of learning a language. Being able to go to a foreign country and connect with the natives in their own tongue is exciting and helps you see your own language and culture in a new light.

I’d like to think of myself as a down-to-earth and accommodating individual; I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, watching or playing sports.

About my sessions

Tutoring a student begins by establishing where the student is currently at in terms of their learning and where they intend to be by a certain stage of time or after a certain amount of tutoring (their targets).

Tutoring a student begins by establishing where the student is currently at in terms of their learning and where they intend to be by a certain stage of time or after a certain amount of tutoring (their targets).

Naturally, it is important to establish a good rapport with the student, so they can speak openly and honestly about their learning. A tutor must listen to what the student has to say and respond to their individual needs, which can sometimes be lost within a classroom scenario.

Having gauged their strengths and weaknesses, I could help the student pinpoint areas to improve or focus on in order to achieve these targets.

Being receptive to the student's personality also helps the tutor to adapt learning; do I need to use the whiteboard often to demonstrate or would a more fluid, discursive approach be more suitable?

Preparing for tutorials would involve me compiling appropriate key points on the work or grammatical point or idea in

hand; though its equally important to adapt, this would enable me to tick off the fundamentals during the tutorial.

It is important at the end of each tutorial to have a plenary, where what has been learned or discussed is

tested and or consolidated. In between tutorials, I might indicate useful vocabulary or resources to support the student's learning, although this would obviously occur in consultation with the student.
