About me

Hello! My name is Emma and I am currently studying Classics at Oxford University. I have a real love for Classics which I can’t wait to share with other students - it is such a great subject and I find it amazing how you can learn so much in depth and breadth under the umbrella of Classics. I have a lot of experience in literature and archaeology specifically, having studied all of the epics (Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid) in depth, along with Greek drama and history. My favourite topics in archaeology include early Greek archaeology, as well as Greek art, such as vases and sculpture. I also have a lot of experience with Pompeii. I have worked in museums with young people, helping them to broaden their perspectives on this interesting and multidisciplinary subject. I want to help students to balance their study of all the different topics, and find a true love for Classics.

I studied English Literature at A Level and enjoyed it very much, as it really helped me to improve my analytical skills. It is important to me to show students the variety within literature, both within English Literature and Classics, and to help them appreciate this and develop a deeper interest.

My preparation for Oxbridge taught me a lot about my subject, and I also learned more about myself in the process. It can seem daunting at first, but I want to help students realise their potential, and help them to achieve their goals, with sound advice and first-hand experience.

About my sessions

Discussion and engagement is incredibly important in any learning environment, and this is what I will strive to promote in my sessions. Encouraging debate and a kind environment in which to learn more about the subject is what I want to achieve, and I want my students to feel comfortable discussing important and nuanced issues. Asking questions and discussion will therefore be an important part of my lessons, working in a tutorial style, with specific discussion of topics a student may be studying at the time. I will end each session by asking a take-home style question for the student to think about, and will then start each session by recapping this question, making sure of continuity and consistency. I am also happy to look over any written work, and give tips and guidance on this.
