Hello! I'm Anna and I'm an English student at the University of Cambridge.

I thoroughly enjoy studying English and find discussions with my fellow students the most rewarding aspect of my degree. I appreciate listening to a variety of approaches towards the same text, something that helps me when I teach.

As a tutor, I am excited to listen to ideas put forward by my tutees, and see my role as helping students translate these initial ideas into structured responses to literature, thereby optimising their potential and avoiding the tendency to ‘coach’ students. I achieved full marks at GCSE and A-Level English, and I feel that this demonstrates my knowledge of the syllabus and commitment to the subject, as well as my desire to succeed and to see others succeeding too.

Whilst my speciality lies English, my time at Cambridge means I am also able to offer in-depth tuition as to what goes into a successful Oxbridge application, and I have experience interviewing at both institutions. I can also offer exemplar personal statements and detailed personal statement advice.

As a student myself, I can appreciate how stressful exams can be, but also how rewarding learning is. As a tutor, it is my hope to minimise this stress and enable students to enjoy the process of learning.

About my sessions

As a tutor, it is my job to ensure that students’ goals are met, therefore ascertaining what these are, and how they can be broken down into a series of achievable tasks is my first priority. As a tutor, it is my job to ensure that students’ goals are met, therefore ascertaining what these are, and how they can be broken down into a series of achievable tasks is my first priority. I generally begin each session by listening to questions from my students, and find that these indicate towards areas of study that need reinforcing.

A rigorous structure is imperative to maximise the potential of each session, and my lesson plans consist of a variety of tasks and different approaches to the same text, rather than an extended period of time working to the same method. For example, if a student requires assistance in understanding a particular poem, I will evaluate the Assessment Objectives 'AOs' required by the exam board before the session, dividing my time between preparing resources to substantiate knowledge (ie. information about context) as well as verbal analysis that we would carry out together during the session. I would then follow up with a detailed, written summary of this discussion to the student, which would be a valuable revision resource. If a student expresses an interest in a particular aspect of literature, I see it as my responsibility to nurture this, and feel that it is more rewarding for both student and tutor if they are talked to, rather than talked at.
