About me

My principle intellectual ardour is literature, and its power to not only to rouse emotion, but to unlock the very confines of the heart, and act as a historical cultural artefact with the ability to 'teach and delight'. My principle intellectual ardour is literature, and its power to not only to rouse emotion, but to unlock the very confines of the heart, and act as a historical cultural artefact with the ability to 'teach and delight'. From an early age my linguistic precocity was frequently noted, though it was in my earliest period during my time at Holy Cross College (eventually running the English extension club, planning small lectures and debates outside of college hours) where I developed an almost obsessive fascination in the limitless prospects of English literature. I have published a small florilegium of sonnets, along with other poems in magazines, notably winning a recent sonnet writing competition at Oxford. Due to the exhaustive nature of the course at Oxford, I consider myself qualified to discuss and explore any given aspect or period of English literature, from Anglo-Saxon English through to the present day, along with relevant historical and philosophical contexts. I am imbibed with a palpable passion for this subject, and anticipate eventually tutoring full-time: I believe this will appear self-evident, and I hope to be able to encourage a similar passion in others. In short, as an avid reader, effervescent writer and individual who strives to understand key literary concepts and underlying social and historical implications which necessarily accompany each text, I believe I would burgeon in the challenge and opportunity a tutoring position would afford me.

About my sessions

I would attempt to arouse and instil a holistic perspective of both literature and language, including relevant historical, philosophical, biographical and social implications of literature, and emphasise the influence of any given piece of literature to its contemporary and proceeding historical timeline. I would attempt to arouse and instil a holistic perspective of both literature and language, including relevant historical, philosophical, biographical and social implications of literature, and emphasise the influence of any given piece of literature to its contemporary and proceeding historical timeline. I would help to develop, though not laboriously, relevant technical terminology in order to familiarise students with the necessary elements of academic discourse, in order to nurture examination skills as well as enhancing various understandings of the discipline through familiarisation with academic vocabulary. I would encourage, where possible, conversation and debate to facilitate proper articulation, and interrogation, of ideas and perceptions, along with developing relevant examination techniques.

In addition, I would attempt to accommodate to the idiosyncratic requirements, both intellectual and dispositional, of every individual student and kindle a fruitful working relation, encouraging appropriately enjoyable sessions. Perhaps above all, it is essential that the student develop some form of passion for the subject in order to reach sufficient levels to fulfil academic potential and rouse intellectual development. I would plan tirelessly for these sessions, reading any secondary critical texts surrounding the specificities of any given student's course, and encourage further reading to broaden comprehension.
