I love studying Law as it forces you to engage with contentious issues, in real-time, constantly encouraging you to think critically and question the world around you. At school, I loved revision as, by Sixth Form, I really found a method that worked for me. I had an amazing first year at university, acting in plays, getting involved in moots and becoming Events Officer of the African Caribbean Society. A barrier to many people achieving their potential is the way that information is taught. Each student has their own learning styles and in the introduction session I will identify the individual's needs so that I can tailor lesson plans for them. I will help students to improve by testing them on new information bi-weekly so that we can assess how well they are retaining information. We will also go through exam questions in lessons and I will set past papers to do on a regular basis. This will help the student to familiarise themselves with the exam layout and practise exam technique - something which is vital to doing well in the final exams. With Oxbridge interview preparation, I will hold 1 hour sessions bringing problem questions and case studies to discuss with the student. I will then give them feedback and pointers on where to improve. I will also review personal statements and question students on what they have written.
The structure of lessons will be tailored. However, a basic outline would be as follows: 10 minutes - introduction to today's topic and any issues or difficulties that the student faces with it in particular; 20 minutes - explaining the topic using diagrams, mnemonics, textbooks etc; 20 minutes - working through past paper questions together; 5 minutes - discussing how the student found this topic; 5 minutes - setting homework and giving 3 things for the student to think about.

In the initial session, we will work together to set goals which will be reviewed on a quarterly basis. I will ask students what they want to work on, rather than working through the syllabus chronologically. This allows them to control their own tuition and refine areas that they find difficult. Furthermore, there will be a monthly assessment which will be comprised of a combination of past paper questions and questions that I have devised. I will grade these in line with National Curriculum grading ie 9-1 for GCSE or A*- E for A-level. I will then feedback areas of improvement and praise the student on areas where they excelled - this will be done in person with the student and through written communication with the parent. To encourage learning, I believe that praise is incredibly important where due, as it helps the student to build the confidence in themselves which is integral to exam success.
