About me

Hello! I am a recent graduate of the University of Oxford, where I achieved a First Class degree in English Language and Literature. I am passionate about literature and how interdisciplinary it is: philosophy, history and politics are all central to literary analysis. Whilst the text itself is primary, I also always encourage my students to think creatively about its context. Helpfully, this is both a very fulfilling approach to literature and also one that exam boards really like!

The 'Language' component of my degree means that as well as my expertise in literature, I am also an expert in the English Language itself: I am well-equipped to tutor GCSE English Language, or A Level English Language.

Having achieved A*s in all my A Levels, including Religious Studies, French and History (at AS level), I am very happy to tutor these

subjects up to both GCSE and A Level standard. I have continued to work on all of these subjects through my degree, some through extra-curricular classes.

Tutoring for the 11+ is something I find very rewarding: helping younger students to engage with language and literature as they transition from primary to high school is exciting, both for the tutor and the student! I have tutored many students successfully for entry into a wide range of schools, including top state grammars and also top private schools, such as St. Paul's Girls and Godolphin and Latymer.

It is very helpful for the student if they are given both short term and long term learning objectives: this both provides a structure for measuring progress and also enables a student to feel that they are constantly improving and achieving as they meet goals in each lesson.

Particularly with regards to English, it is really important that the student feels that they are able to contemplate a text themselves: independent thinking is key, and it is for this reason that my teaching approach is to ask lots of questions and try to encourage as much discussion and debate as possible as opposed to directly giving students answers. Students therefore grow in confidence, both in their written and spoken work, and learn to explore and critique their own ideas. Helping a student feel passionate about the subject is the most important thing, and it is this passion that will help them to succeed academically. However, I will also always gently encourage students to tailor their thinking and interests towards the mark scheme of whatever exam board they are using in order to ensure the tutoring sessions are as fruitful for their academic performance as possible.
