About me

Hello! I'm Rishem and I am currently a Classics student at the University of Oxford. The first time I ever thought about studying Classics to university level was back in year 11 when I was inspired by my Latin teacher; she was my favourite teacher and her lessons were always ones that I looked forward to. Often, having a teacher that you look up to and aspire to is the best way of developing a more severe interest in that subject; I would love for my own students to feel inspired by me!...

The first time I ever thought about studying Classics to university level was back in year 11 when I was inspired by my Latin teacher; she was my favourite teacher and her lessons were always ones that I looked forward to. Often, having a teacher that you look up to and aspire to is the best way of developing a more severe interest in that subject; I would love for my own students to feel inspired by me! One of the most commonly asked questions to Classics students is "why do you study it? Isn't it irrelevant?", but what most people don't realise is that the majority of the English spoken language has developed from Latin and Greek, and the world wouldn't function in the same way without it. It is incredibly relevant to other subjects as well; for example, one of the most popular theorems taught in Maths is Pythagoras' Theorem, and we wouldn't be inclined to think twice about where exactly this came from. Pythagoras was in fact a Greek philosopher and his discoveries thousands of years ago still hold a huge prominence today. I want my students to enjoy the subject that they are studying because if they do, the desire to improve will come hand in hand.

About my sessions

Ahead of every lesson I will prepare a worksheet for the relevant topic that we are going to study during our one hour online session. During the class, I will give the student time to attempt all of the questions and go through them afterwards making sure that they understand the ins and outs of the answer. If requested, I will provide homework with a given deadline and mark this ahead of the next class so that we can go through it together and the student can bring up any difficulties he/sh...

Ahead of every lesson I will prepare a worksheet for the relevant topic that we are going to study during our one hour online session. During the class, I will give the student time to attempt all of the questions and go through them afterwards making sure that they understand the ins and outs of the answer. If requested, I will provide homework with a given deadline and mark this ahead of the next class so that we can go through it together and the student can bring up any difficulties he/she had when attempting the questions. I also think that it is important to recap topics regularly because it is very easy to understand something and then forget how it works just a few weeks later; therefore, for every fifth session, I will make a worksheet of questions with a question covering each of the topics that we have previously covered to see how well the information has been retained and cover any ground that is slightly uncertain.

To encourage learning, I will give students an opportunity to ask questions about anything slightly afar from the topic we have covered and around the subject more generally because it inspires them to think more in depth about their subject. If they can ask questions that aren't necessarily covered on the syllabus, a genuine passion for the subject grows because they are not learning just for exams.
