About me

Hi! I'm Jake and I'm a third year maths student at Durham university. I'm currently studying towards and integrated masters degree in maths and after my degree will hopefully be going on to do a phd in statistical based work. Why maths? I love the logic behind it and how it can be understood universally. I really believe that anyone can understand maths- some just need to have it tailored to their experiences. As the societies officer at my college in Durham, I have helped to create a STEM society which has showed me how diverse people who do these subjects are and how people all learn differently. In order to help my students improve, I will slowly adapt my lessons to suit them more by initially trying to understand how their brain works and how they can learn best, because there's no way this could ever be achieved in a classroom of around 20 people. I, myself, had to work out the best ways I learn so that my revision was always most effective for me.

About my sessions

I'd first love to see some of the students previous work. This would obviously help me to see the specific topics which need improvement but also how they can improve their exam technique. We would then focus on one topic at a time. The way I would structure the lessons is first with the key points of the topic i.e. all the information the student needs to know before even touching examples. Then I will take them through the misconceptions/stumbling blocks of the topic; where do people usually go wrong? This will start them already thinking about possible mistakes they could make and will hopefully stop them from making them. Then I will go through a couple of examples with them. This will be lead by me with some input from them, just so they get a feel for the method. Then, its down to them. I will give them a question or two (possibly exam questions) to try on their own with minimal input from me. The best and probably only way to get good at maths is through practising which is why the majority of the lesson will focus on examples and past questions. At the start of the next lesson, I will also set a question from the topic of last time to see if they've made progress and have mastered the topic. Throughout the process, I will also tell them about tips I learnt at GCSE and A-Level including the "is it reasonable?" answer test. The structure of my lessons is actually how I have conducted my revision since GCSE and (with tweaks per person) can be used universally.
