About me

Hi, I’m Lauren! I’m about to start my third year as a chemistry student at the University of Oxford.

I love science and maths, and enjoy sharing this passion with my students. I have worked with students from a range of ages, levels and backgrounds to help hone their exam technique; giving them confidence in their problem-solving abilities so that when exams come around, they feel ready.

People learn in lots of different ways. Over the course of my studies, I have done a considerable amount of research into the best ways to learn & revise, even more so recently having just discovered that I am dyslexic. As a result of this, I am acutely aware of the challenges that learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, can bring and work with my students to find the best ways that they can learn and tailor my tutorials accordingly.

I attended my local state comprehensive school and remember clearly the daunting nature of the university, especially Oxford, application processes. I would be more than happy to help students wishing to streamline their personal statement or discuss Oxbridge applications and interviews.

About my sessions

During the first session, I like to get to know a little bit about my student’s targets, their learning style and the areas that they would like to improve. We will then come up with a quick plan of action - this is so that we can move on to the next area of difficulty swiftly if we cover a topic quickly in a session.

We will then come up with a quick plan of action - this is so that we can move on to the next area of difficulty swiftly if we cover a topic quickly in a session.

A typical session runs as follows:

· Brief discussion of what student already understands about a topic

· I thoroughly explain the topic with reference to their exam specification, carefully correcting any misunderstandings the student had at the beginning and highlighting real-life applications of the topic.

· We work through a number of past exam questions together;

I emphasise common mistakes and encourage my students to think about how the topic could relate to other things they have learnt.

Initially I tend to lead these but as the student builds up more confidence, I hope to see them suggesting their own ideas of how to solve the problems with only occasional prompts.

· At the end of the session, I provide a number of optional problems for the student to attempt before the next session. At the beginning of the next session, we will briefly go over these before moving on to a new topic.

I am also happy to do revision sessions - in these we can cover a range of topics, revision strategies, tricky past paper questions and advice for the exams themselves.
