About me

Hello! My name is Jess. I am currently a final year PhD student at the University of Cambridge. My PhD is in Clinical Neuroscience, working in the Stroke Research group. I perform brain scans on stroke patients to investigate the link between leaky blood vessels in the brain and dementia, which will hopefully lead to new treatments!

I have a background in all of the sciences, studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A-level, before completing a Neuroscience degree (Biology based) at the University of Bristol. I'm very comfortable teaching Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at GCSE and A-level!

I know how scary exams can be - I've sat a lot of them! I know how important it is to be prepared for them so you can do your absolute best and keep doors open for future opportunities. But it's also important to enjoy the learning - maths and science are fascinating subjects and are areas with a lot of great career prospects! So I would love to help inspire others to enjoy learning about these subjects and the opportunities they can bring.

I am also captain of my college's rowing team and have spent a lot of time training up beginners and building crews that are competitive but also have a lot of fun! Hopefully I can be the right person to help you with maths and science and show you how interesting these subjects can be. If you think so, feel free to send me a message or arrange a 15 minute free 'get to know me' session!

About my sessions

The way I would teach the lessons would be dependent on the individual student. Some students like me to teach alongside what they are learning at school, whereas others have specific topics that they are struggling with that they would like to focus on. Prior to each session, I would message the student to ask which topic they would like me to go over. I would then use this to build a lesson plan.

I would spend the first part of the lesson guiding the student through the topic. This part of the lesson will involve quite a bit of discussion where myself and the student can ask each other questions and fully assess the student's current understanding of the topic. I will try and make the topics as interesting as possible, with links to real life.

For the second part of the session, I will then assess the knowledge through some exam-style questions. Depending on the student's preference, these can be quite informal where we discuss the questions together and talk through what we think would go into a good answer. Or, the student can answer them in a more formal format and then we can discuss their answer.

After the session, I would send out a short summary to the student on what we covered. If the student would like some extra work to do outside of the sessions, I can also send through some extra questions that they can do in their own time, and we can discuss anything they are still unsure of in the following session.
