About me

Who am I?

I am currently an undergraduate studying French and Spanish at the University of Cambridge. I grew up bilingual, and have always been fascinated by the process of language learning. Languages open up new worlds, and I would love to share the passion that has driven my studies with you!

I was previously an MFL mentor in my sixth form, where my role was to support younger students during their AS Levels, and to promote the importance of studying languages. I also used to organise debates for these students in order to increase their confidence when speaking a foreign language.

About my sessions

What will we cover in tutorials?

Learning a language is very much an individual process, even if it is just to pass an exam, so I encourage the tutee to guide the structure of the lessons. I will endeavour to find the best approach for you, regardless of what you’re struggling with (e.g. grammar, vocabulary, or writing). I have access to a wealth of resources that I myself used, and can provide you with to further develop your skills. I hope to make the lessons engaging through my personable approach, and to maximise our lesson time to benefit you. I would like build your confidence in your chosen language(s), as well as to help you fully achieve your potential.

I’m considering Oxbridge.. can you help?!

Yes! Having been through the process myself, I can completely appreciate how overwhelming and stressful it can be. I hope that my advice and tips can help you make a successful application, whichever stage you may be at. Moreover, I am happy to organise mock interviews (they do become less daunting!) and to support you in writing a Personal Statement.

What to do next?

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions via WebMail or to book a ‘Meet the Tutor Session’. Do remember to specify your exam board, and what you’re finding difficult. I’d love to help and look forward to meeting you!

Zahra is everything you would want from a tutor - incredibly intelligent and patient, she fits her lessons based on every one of her students' needs and never lets you down. She was much more helpful than any of my teachers when it came to writing and editing my personal statement! If I could give her ten stars, I would :) Thank you Zahra for all your help!!!

Zahra is simply superb! She is incredibly enthusiastic, patient and articulate. Her tutorials are structured to successfully tackle all areas of language study, to ensure that you are confident in every aspect of your exam. Having personally struggled with translation, Zahra has provided me countless exercises and she expresses the intricacies of grammar with such clarity that I have found that I have made progress very quickly. I highly recommend having her as tutor!

Questions Zahra has answered

When do I need to use the imperfect tense in Spanish?

In Spanish, the imperfect tense is one of the many past tenses. It is mainly used to describe habitual actions in the past (things that used to happen). It can also be used to set the scene in the past, for example, what a person was doing when something else took place. Consider the following examples:1) I used to play football - (Yo) jugaba al fútbol. 2) I was playing football when it started to rain - (Yo) estaba jugando al fútbol cuando empezó a llover. The hard part is remembering when to use the correct tense, once you’ve grasped that, learning the verb endings to correctly conjugate the verb won’t seem so hard!In Spanish, the imperfect tense is one of the many past tenses.
