About me

I am currently studying for a Master’s degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University. Stories have always been a big part of my life and I enjoy telling them as much as I love analysing them: I currently work as an assistant editor of Lancaster’s student-run literary magazine Cake and have previously worked on producing a pilot episode of a local true story podcast. As someone who is deeply entrenched in both sides of storytelling, I believe it to be a vital component of the world we live in because it allows us to connect with each other and guides us through the entire spectrum of human conflict and emotion.

The best part of studying literature is the imagination contained both within it and around it. A text can be read in a myriad of ways and there are innumerable layers from which to tease out various nuances and meanings. I find that this goes hand in hand with literature’s most empowering aspect, which is discovering how we relate to texts and utilising this knowledge to craft an original framework with which to answer questions. I am looking to share how I developed and refined my own process of crafting a template that I based all my A Level answers on to consistently score top marks. I will encourage students to work with me to identify their unique take on literature so that we can construct a framework tailored to helping them achieve using their own merits and insights.

About my sessions

It is important that learning is oriented around the individual needs of each student and I will accomplish this through efficient timing. The first ten minutes will ascertain the content we will cover as well as the goals and potential concerns of the student. Around the halfway point, I will clarify that we are on the same page and discuss if the trajectory of the learning should take a different course. Towards the end, we will complete a recap and I will answer any remaining questions.

My tutoring style will prioritise open collaboration to explore new ideas without fear of judgement. I am a big advocate of ensuring that people are judged to their own standards so I will measure progress in each student by looking at how confidently they engage with the various themes of their texts, relative to their previous abilities. An increasing speed and ability to piece together an original and engaging answer will indicate progress. Literature functions brilliantly as an open space because it is so difficult to directly compare responses to it, particularly when any idea can be exceptional if developed enough. I hope this ethos will reduce any anxiety in my students.

I will prepare for lessons by doing wider reading around student texts and creating a list of tailored thinking points. I will also review the mark schemes of the relevant exam boards and past papers to ensure I keep in line with existing practice.
