I love travelling, and over the years I have combined this love with working to help students all over Europe. I have worked as a tutor in Italy and Germany, and spent 2017-18 working with the British Council as an English language teacher in Austria. I have also volunteered as a tutor for refugees and older students wishing to take public exams.

I am outgoing and encouraging, and very passionate about German and English. I lived and worked in two German-speaking countries, and have good knowledge of German language, history, culture and literature. I write regularly, having contributed to university papers in English and German, had articles published in The Tab and The Daily Mail, and worked at The Day as a schools writer. I have English A level and have experience teaching English both as a foreign language and as a GCSE-level literature/language topic. I like to help students reach their full potential when it comes to hitting the targets set by exams.

My tutoring style involves joint effort and various activities to motivate and encourage, generally make people feel good about learning!

About my sessions

I will always prepare lessons based on individual students' needs and goals. Setting overall and short-term goals has worked for me in the past as it breaks things down into manageable steps.

With English GCSE and A level, I often found that problems weren't always to do with understanding but being able to communicate those ideas in essays. I will establish what students wish to practice or improve on, while preparing by reading any texts they are dealing with, either from English language anthology, or preparing plays and books for literature papers. I will help to break that down into chapters, themes, and individual aims, to help students pursue their personal goals.

With a language like German, it is always important to have a balance of vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing. I have particular games, puzzles and tricks for learning vocab and grammar, and in each session we can establish a few goals for the end of the session, as well as for the following week. Reading practice can make technical work more relevant and interesting. I am a keen believer in speaking practice. I think it's really important to build up confidence. This was something that I found really hard until I went to work in Germany - I simply hadn't ever had the opportunity to speak German to anybody! I would offer specific help to those facing oral examinations.
