About me

I am a music student at the University of Cambridge, and a choral scholar in St John's College Choir which sings seven times every week. Music has been my passion since beginning to sing regularly with a Cathedral choir aged 7, and I also play piano, organ and percussion. My personal focus is on singing and conducting, and I have been fortunate to be involved with the University Opera Society (CUOS) as Vice-President, conducting shows in Cambridge and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as...

I am a music student at the University of Cambridge, and a choral scholar in St John's College Choir which sings seven times every week. Music has been my passion since beginning to sing regularly with a Cathedral choir aged 7, and I also play piano, organ and percussion. My personal focus is on singing and conducting, and I have been fortunate to be involved with the University Opera Society (CUOS) as Vice-President, conducting shows in Cambridge and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as conducting other ensembles including my own. This experience has given me a unique insight into how musicians learn, develop, and work together to achieve their goals.

Education

is a central part of any music career, but having had such fortunate

opportunities to learn at such a young age in Gloucester Cathedral Choir it is

of particular importance to me to help teach, tutor and aid young people with a

passion and talent for music. As a boy chorister I was given intense training

in music theory, sight-reading and practical musicianship which has laid the

foundations for everything I do at Cambridge and outside today. I feel very

strongly about the poor state of music education that is generally available in

this country, and so I am looking to do everything I can to make a difference

and provide young people with the support and direction they need to achieve

what they are capable of.

About my sessions

The benefit of one-to-one tutoring is that sessions can be tailored to the individual. Never more so is this important than with music. Certainly the most interdisciplinary subject, music covers the widest variety of skills that students can encounter at school, and often at university. Students may often find themselves struggling with a particular element of the subject, either in written response to questions, or with technical exercises such as harmonising Bach chorales, or even with the...

The benefit of one-to-one tutoring is that sessions can be tailored to the individual. Never more so is this important than with music. Certainly the most interdisciplinary subject, music covers the widest variety of skills that students can encounter at school, and often at university. Students may often find themselves struggling with a particular element of the subject, either in written response to questions, or with technical exercises such as harmonising Bach chorales, or even with the most creative discipline that is composition. Tutoring in music requires the most individually tailored approach, and my sessions will focus on identifying a student’s struggles and anxieties, and helping them to find the solutions and answers themselves, thereby giving them the confidence they need to carry with them into the exam room, interview, or even the stage.

Sessions may focus on history, analysis, composition, harmony and counterpoint (such as Bach chorales), performance issues, exam technique, interview preparation, university application, diploma preparation, and more. I am very happy to have an informal chat with any prospective tutees to discuss how I might be able to help and how we could tailor the sessions towards their needs.
