About me

Hi everyone! I'm Michael and I'm currently a third-year undergraduate student at the University of York studying chemistry. I always enjoyed all the sciences, especially chemistry, throughout my education and achieved high grades at both GCSE and A Level in science and maths. Hi everyone! I'm Michael and I'm currently a third-year undergraduate student at the University of York studying chemistry. I always enjoyed all the sciences, especially chemistry, throughout my education and achieved high grades at both GCSE and A Level in science and maths. The most exciting thing about my degree is how vast the subject is and how rapidly the field is progressing, with new advancements happening all the time. For me exams have always been, and still are, a very stressful time so I understand the importance of feeling confident and as best-prepared as possible for them. Likewise, I strongly believe the key to success in exams is to thoroughly understand the content rather than just memorising it, as this makes applying knowledge to complex questions much easier. When I’m not studying, I enjoy playing hockey and winding down by playing the guitar. My hope is that I can use my experiences of GCSE and A Level to help improve the understanding and confidence of students studying science and maths to allow them to reach their full potential.

About my sessions

I believe acknowledging that different students learn and progress differently by using different techniques is key to helping them study, which is why I will tailor my lesson plans to each individual student. In our first session we will discuss what the student is finding most difficult (be that understanding, application or exam technique etc.) and what styles of learning they feel they engage best with. We will also discuss where they currently stand grade wise, and what their goals are....

We will also discuss where they currently stand grade wise, and what their goals are. In my previous tutoring experience, I have found techniques such as RAG sheets beneficial for gauging progress. For this the student will be periodically provided with a list of topics and will be asked to rank these red, amber or green corresponding to if they find them hard, medium or easy. This is a clear and visual indication for both the student and I to see how their knowledge is progressing. As the student gets more confident in their understanding, I will start giving them past exam questions to further assess how they’re doing, find which areas could possibly need more work and to give them as much exam technique experience as possible. I believe it is very important for the student to see themselves progressing to improve confidence in their own abilities. Between sessions I will choose areas for the student to look over again ready to try a question on at the beginning of the next session, to give us chance to review the topic and iron out any uncertainties.
