About me

AQA French GCSE/A Level

Oxford French Entry Examination

Hi there! I’m Matt, recent graduate from Oxford University, and I tutor French GCSE, A Level and for the Oxbridge entrance exam. I have always been extremely passionate about languages, and I believe that the best way to learn a language is through bespoke sessions that focus on the student’s individual needs, making it both accessible and relevant.

While the school curriculum can be enriching and interesting, the main problem is that it has to be broad enough to suit a class full of varying abilities. You might be finding that your class is covering topics too fast and that things aren’t really clicking for you. If this is the case, we’ll go back to basics. Once you’ve got a solid working understanding of how French works and fits together syntactically and grammatically, we can begin to develop vocabulary and come up with an action plan as to how to get the higher grades. School exams are surprisingly formulaic: the examiners have a checklist of what they are looking for, and I’m here to make sure that you fulfil their criteria, all the while adding that little bit of personal flare (they love a good subjunctive!).

On the other hand, you may feel that the curriculum is too restrictive, and that you’re eager to push forward and explore the more advanced elements of French beyond A-Level. The beauty of reading French sole at Oxford has meant that I’ve been able to study all of its aspects in great depth – my modules range from its evolution from Latin, which helps explain tense structure and word order, right through to French cinema, philosophy and poetry. If you are considering applying to study French at university, I’d be more than happy to look over your personal statement and give you a few tips.

My aim is to tutor in a relaxed, approachable and productive way; whether you are looking to brush up on your tenses, practise your reading comprehension or gain some confidence in spoken French, we’ll gauge what areas you need to focus on and set realistic goals from session to session, which I’ll prepare in advance.

If you’d like to find out more about what I can offer, please feel free to book a session to meet me! I’ll answer any questions you may have, and it’s completely free.

I’m free most evenings after 6pm GMT and over the weekend.
