About me

I have recently graduated with a first in Social Science from Durham University, majoring in Sociology and Social Geography. Throughout my time at university I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about social topics and issues and have become passionate about using academia as a way to understand real-life situations and the experiences of those around me. Throughout my time at university I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about social topics and issues and have become passionate about using academia as a way to understand real-life situations and the experiences of those around me. My degree taught me to take a deeper look at society and question things that I thought as ‘normal’ came to be. I want to convey my enthusiasm to my students, as it is always so much better and easier to learn about something you value or enjoy!

I have always enjoyed education and achieved all A*s and As in my GCSE’s and A-levels. I have faced academic challenges and sometimes lacked confidence, this is where I have really valued having a tutor myself. Having been to a state school with large class sizes, I understand that sometimes it can be hard to get the attention you need. As a tutor I will give you the one-on-one focus you deserve and enable you to feel positive about your own abilities!

At university I have been heavily involved in extra-curricular activities and have made the most of Durham’s collegiate system. I have been on the rowing team, debate president, welfare officer and ran the Summer Ball. I have enjoyed every part of university life and would love to help others have the same experience.

About my sessions

I will be a reflexive tutor and pay attention to how my tutee responds to particular learning activities to adapt the session to them.

I want to help students by boosting their confidence! I would create a positive learning experience by valuing their suggestions, giving constructive criticism and always focusing on how they could change and improve their work and by reinforcing what they are good at and do well.

I want to help students by boosting their confidence! I would create a positive learning experience by valuing their suggestions, giving constructive criticism and always focusing on how they could change and improve their work and by reinforcing what they are good at and do well.

I want to help my students achieve as best they can, by offering them excellent knowledge in an accessible form. Academic writing can be intimidating, so I hope to explain theories and ideas in an approachable way. My lessons will be interactive, I will encourage students to ask questions and feel comfortable to ask for further explanation. Visual prompts, such as diagrams or pictures, can make lessons more engaging. These can spark ideas and be used to talk through ideas together. I find that spoken prompts such as questions or a debate topic are a great way to generate ideas and critical discussion.

I will structure my lessons by giving an overview of the topic, promoted by debate or video for instance, before moving onto exploring these ideas through an academic concept or scholar, and finishing with applying the learning to an exam or coursework question. However, I would be happy to tailor any lesson to the topic or student!
