Hi! I’m SJ and I’m a recent English graduate from the University of Cambridge.

English has always been a passion of mine - the different ways in which texts can be interpreted and how they reflect society makes it a fascinating subject. However, it’s also for these very reasons that English can be challenging!

For this reason, my Online Lessons focus on preparing students in two ways: exam success and learned ability. I believe in enabling students to achieve the best results while equipping them with an understanding of the subject that becomes instinctual to them and encourages interest. The students I tutor not only walk into exam halls with the confidence that they can answer the set questions, but also have the self-belief that they can solve any question with any text.

The structure of my lessons is unique to each student depending on their goals, but a typical Online Lesson will consist of close analysis of either set texts or "unseen" texts to get students used to different pieces of literature, and a sample exam question at the end that we will discuss how to confront. A 20 minute piece of homework will be set at the end of each lesson, which I will discuss with the student for 10 minutes at the beginning of the next lesson. This ensures that students develop skills in both reading and critical analysis and writing effectively for specific audiences.

About my sessions

I structure my Online Lessons in a similar way to my supervisions at university, that is making lessons more of a discussion than an interrogation!

First I like to understand from the student themselves what their objectives are and where they think they could improve, and also to assess this for myself through discussing a relevant piece of text and seeing a recent piece of homework. From this I will be able to structure my Online Lessons to really hone in on the student’s...

First I like to understand from the student themselves what their objectives are and where they think they could improve, and also to assess this for myself through discussing a relevant piece of text and seeing a recent piece of homework. From this I will be able to structure my Online Lessons to really hone in on the student’s areas for improvement.

Progress is measured regularly through 20 minutes of homework each week, where the student will have to showcase what they learnt through a short answer to an exam question, a creation of a piece of study material or a piece of creative or persuasive writing. Closer to exams these answers will be timed to get the student used to writing under timed conditions.

I always bring material to share with the student on the Online Lesson space, usually scans of pages from a book, quotes etc., with an exam question at the end to tie it all up. Lessons are interactive - highlighting particular words in a sentence, drawing mind maps that the student can use in their revision - and full of discussion, since I believe this is the best way to encourage learning.

SJ is a wonderful tutor who is very approachable and encouraging! It is very clear that she wants to help her student to succeed! I like how she has a clear structure for essay writing. The feedback she gave for my essay was very clear and detailed. Moreover, she also sent me many other resources for reference! Overall, I am truly grateful to have SJ as my tutor!
