About me

Hi there, my name is Rob and I really hope that I can be a tutor for you! I have just completed my first year at Durham University doing English Language and Literature, which I'm loving. This would seem surprising as English used to be my worst subject. However, there were a few things that changed for me that meant that i went from getting C's to consistently getting A*s, and then achieving the highest mark at A-level for English in my year. I never appreciated English for what it was- creative, passionate and deeply personal. I want as many people as possible to see these things in the subject, and to really enjoy studying it! You will then do really well.

There are a few things that can be done to rapidly improve yourself in English- it is all about looking at what the examiners want, and the mark schemes are a great way into this. Close reading (highly detailed analysis) is key. Yet i think a factor that is overlooked by the stress exams is that you must want to study it! It really is the best subject to learn/study. I believe that if you are enjoying the lessons then you will learn so much more effectively, and this will also carry through to your revision in your own time. And this doesn't need to be in contrast to the fact that you might be finding it difficult.

About my sessions

Having done a year at Durham University, I know a broad spectrum of texts. Yet the texts themselves do not matter as much as you may think- what is essential is a close engagement with the mark scheme, and to be always relevant in regards to the question. These are key universal skills. I can also look at your analysis in detail as this is also key.

My lessons are very flexible and so I can work around what you would like me to look at. As you have probably gathered, mark schemes I find are always a good topic to go to if you are stuck. However, what i really want is to convey and instill some of my enthusiasm for the subject. Having regular sessions and measuring your progress is important, and I find a good way of seeing this is how much the student can teach me, not the other way round! English gives you an opportunity most other subjects don't: to think for yourself- you should enjoy this! Better results will follow!

If you are looking to write a Personal Statement for an English related degree, then I'm also happy to help you with it. This is a necessary hurdle to get to university, but it is also something in which you can show your enjoyment of the subject and show off a bit! If you are just starting to get into English properly, then I'm very happy to give directions as to what you might want to read to get you going in the right direction, and also to getting that university place!
