About me

Hi, I'm Beth

I'm a linguistics student at Cambridge University. I love all things language and being able to understand why it is the way it is. Personally, I'm a huge fan of syntax, breaking down sentences into pieces, working out how they fit together and analysing the mechanisms behind it. I'm also intrigued by the way children acquire language and the way language interacts with the mind. While I'm at uni, I'm part of the college lacrosse team and I occasiona...

While I'm at uni, I'm part of the college lacrosse team and I occasionally run with the university running club.

I actually originally applied for Classics and spent a term on that degree. That means I got to experience both degrees and the challenge of catching up. This in particular helped me develop new learning and revision techniques to make the most of the time that I had left before exams.

When I was at school, doing exams and applying for university was honestly quite an exhausting process - so much of the work I did was unnecessary. Therefore, over the past year or so I have refined my revision processes and the way I work to become much more efficient. One of the reasons that I am so keen to tutor school students is that I wish I had had advice on this topic while I was at school or been shown ways of working that were more productive - exams and university applications don't have to be stressful!

About my sessions

Ideally, my sessions would be structured around a piece of work or a topic that the student feels they need clarification and reinforcement on. We'd start with initial questions and then answer them together by going through the topic and the work; I believe it's much easier to learn something in context of a question or exam answer. Where appropriate, I'd encourage extending knowledge further (especially relevant for English Language A level and English Literature A level) in ord...

Ideally, my sessions would be structured around a piece of work or a topic that the student feels they need clarification and reinforcement on. We'd start with initial questions and then answer them together by going through the topic and the work; I believe it's much easier to learn something in context of a question or exam answer. Where appropriate, I'd encourage extending knowledge further (especially relevant for English Language A level and English Literature A level) in order to gain extra credit. Hopefully, these sessions would take an open, conversation-like structure.

But this depends on what the student needs; I'm very happy to be flexible with session structure/content. A useful learning technique that's also worked for me in the past is to co-write a model answer to get the student in the exam mindset. I found this method particularly useful for exams. This would involve preparation on my part of becoming familiar with the syllabus, relevant mark schemes, and examiner reports and then preparing resources for the session itself.

When preparing for exams, I was (still am!) a huge fan of mind-maps - they help condense information so that when it comes to learning it, it's far less scary. I then learn by trying to replicate the mind-map from memory until I can do it. Ultimately though, tutoring is about finding something that works for an individual as everyone learns differently!

She explained everything very well, and went the extra mile by planning the lesson beforehand and reading model answers.
