About me

Hi! My name is Sam and I am a second-year law student at the University of Oxford. From crime and the constitution to contract and negligence, law is all about absorbing large volumes of information, breaking it down and using it to develop and support a thoughtful line of argument . These are skills I developed studying English and Classics and I continue to pursue my interests in literature, theatre and the ancient world alongside my degree. In my view, at the heart of tutoring is a real desire and determination to see a student succeed. This of course includes putting time and effort into improving grades but I wish to do more than that. I will push my students to think for themselves, challenge my opinions and use what they have learnt to support their assertions. This ability to think independently and provide personal, insightful analysis is not only crucial for success in essay based exam subjects but is also highly prized at top universities and by employers. Although new to MyTutor, I have tutored at many levels including for entrance exams and GCSE. I have also delivered revision skills sessions to A Level English classes. These experiences have taught me that every student is different and as such I will always be willing to adapt my style to the individual student’s needs. As a tutor, I will do everything I can to help my student succeed both in their exams and in later life.

About my sessions

My lessons are designed to improve three key areas: content knowledge, exam technique and independent thought. Before our sessions begin, I will ask my student for a list of the specific areas they would like to cover. Each session will be divided into four sections. I will begin by discussing the topic in broad terms with my student. This is an opportunity to explain the importance, relevance and difficulties associated with the lesson’s material. Following this, I will deliver a lecture on...

Following this, I will deliver a lecture on the topic. This will focus on the key factual material which is essential to success in the exam and will also include suggestions of further reading and resources. The third section will focus on working through one or two past paper questions which I have selected. This section focuses on essay structure, using and applying knowledge to support arguments and developing personal response. Finally, I will ask some questions to ensure that the student has understood the core material from the lesson and will then set a short piece of homework for the next session (if the student feels they have the time to complete it). At the start of the next session, we will spend ten minutes or so going through the homework with a mark scheme and my own response to the same question. In my view, this is a really effective way of measuring progress and preparing for the exam.
